Typeface on currency

zeranix

I'm doing a research paper on the different typefaces found on currency. Can anyone help with examples or information? It be greatly appreciated.

Of course, there's Optima, but that's probably not really what you mean by "typefaces found on currency" :-)

The newest U.S. quarters use Albertus quite a bit. Nice choice, I thought.

I thought the fonts used on US dollars are Forgery and Gotojail

Technically, currency doesn't use typefaces at all. They are engraved (except for the serial numbers and certain other elements). I don't know what the process is today, but at one time it was all done by hand with some kind of pantographic engraving tool to transfer and reduce the artwork to the plates.

Some of the letterforms on currency look like familiar typefaces (Copperplate, for example), so maybe they start from type in some cases.

The process remains the same: i saw a documentary on Discovery Channel about makin of an aniversary coin. the transfer Mark talked about took days to complete.

thanks for all the information.

Federal is a font inspired by US currency, but it's not a source typeface.
