Eric Gill, type specimen

Baskerville

I just posted this on another design forum, thought you guys on here might get a giggle from this. We were discussing Gill's dubious sexual practices so I made this:

I think the spacing needs a bit of work 'typographer' for example seems tighter than the other words. Also the "GILL 1921" suggests this is a Gill quote (or a date associated with the dog shagging) rather than a date associated with Gill (Sans) the font.

I spent about 2 minutes on it as a joke but thanks for the crit. I did it in photoshop for speed and it was certainly not a considered piece of design or typography. The date 1921 was just a random date that I knew he was alive, could be construed as a quote I guess.

Maybe I'll develop it into a proper poster and do in letterpress.

Fair enough. Reminds me of when Andy Crewdson decided to print some shirts featuring a Gill quote. Lines & Splines readers were invited to vote for a quote and of course one about the dog got the most votes. At which point Andy stated that he wasn't going to print that quote.

In hindsight maybe that was a turning point for him, moving away from the font world? I guess we'll never know.

I want to see if anyone can make an actual pangram out of this.

All of the above is new. I could do the print. You design. Maybe need some ornate of some sort.

AGL do you do letterpress work? If so, it would be cool make a proper piece from these, even just for fun. I'm happy to work with you on this if you're interested

Sure. Email me your ideas. I can help you regarding the artwork specs. You do the design. I am always interested :-)

The quick, newsprint-fezzed typographer jumps onto his beloved boxer.

The quick Eric from Sussex, Britain, who jumped over his lazy dog.

or

The quick Gill from Sussex, Britain, who jumped over his lazy dog.

The quick, vile Eric jumped on his lazy, frowning boxer.

Sphinx of black Gill, why jump over my lazy dog? Quit!

Eric asked, "Pack my box with liquor jugs, five schnauzers."

The quick brown foxy sculptor jumped over his lazy dog.

Lyric by a contemporary of Gill's:

Experiment
by Cole Porter

Before we leave these portals
to meet our paramortals,
there's just one final massage I would give to you.

We all have learned reliance
on the sacred teachings of science,
so I hope through life you never will become,
in spite of philistines, defiant,
to do what all good scientists do.

Experiment.
Make it your motto day and night.

Experiment.
And it will lead you to the light.

The apple from the top of the tree
is never too high to achieve.
So take an example from me.

Experiment.

Be curious,
though interfering friends may frown.

Get furious,
at each attempt to hold you down.

If this advice you'll only employ,
the future can offer you infinite joy
and merriment.

Experiment,
and you'll see.

one final massage I would give to you

Good one Nick! :-)

Good one indeed :-)

Sorry, I just swiped it off the internet, didn't check the spelling.
I have a recording of the song from the 1920s, a London show with it sung by a French lady with a very thick accent, so perhaps the transcription was made from that!
