Grouping Fonts into Families

West

Hi!

Do any of you fine folks know of software that allows you to group stray fonts into families at will? For instance, my office has a mangled list of about 33 Times New Roman versions strewn throughout our font list. I would like to somehow wrangle them together so that my design team is not searching all day for the condensed version etc.

We use both Mac and PC. I am hoping for a solution that suits both systems (hahaha) but I will of course settle for either.

Thanks! Let me know what you know!

I use Linotype FontExplorer X

There is an option to group families, and it does it for you. It's my favorite font program – and it's free.

I actually use that on my Mac. I know it would organize the fonts into groups in the program itself. But are you saying there is a function that will group the fonts together for use in other programs?

Basically, I want to be able to scroll down my font list in illustrator/Indesign, and only have: "Helvetica" with all the different helvetica related typefaces contained therein. Does this make sense?

If FontExplorer X can do that, can you tell me how?

This is not a feature of FontExplorer X. It requires something that would actually edit the fonts.

Any ideas Mr. Phinney?

FontLab would do it, but....

- way too expensive for the task

- most font licenses don't allow modifications like this

Cheers,

Ah. That makes sense that it would be a licensing issue. I hadn't thought of it that way.

Thanks.
