(x) California license plate - Futura, Capone {Patricia, Mark S}

silly

can anyone help me out with the fonts used on the california license plate?california plate

Custom Avenida?

Sorry for the double post.

California is similar to Plaza but not quite, Hot Rod looks like Futura which has been condensed (but not Futura Condensed). You can tell by the variance on the thicknesses of the vertical and horizontal strokes.

I'm full of crap. Scratch that.

HOT ROD is just squished Avant Garde. If you want a more realistic license plate font, check Penitentiary Gothic. I know the other one, too -- gimme a minute.

Oops, never mind -- I must have been thinking of Avenida and Plaza, too. But you can add Anna to the almost-but-not-quite list. And on further thought I take it back about Avant Garde -- Patricia's right about Futura. Boy that looks terrible.

"CALIFORNIA" is Capone Medium.

Ahh, another Panache special that can only be found at FontHaus.
Thanks Mark!

Also, I figured out which version/weight of Futura it is: Futura Heavy (the Bitstream version). For comparison, I restored the proportions of the original sample and set the characters in that face:

hotrod

Oooh... Mark, thorough as ever. It's an utter delight
to have you on board.

Godawful license plate type though... :-( Compare that to
Germany or Pennsylvania...

That's not what the license plate type actually looks like, though. And we have some much better plate designs as well. For example, I have a whale-tail plate that looks something like this:

whale

It's pretty sweet, actually. And the extra fees go 100% to coastal cleanup funds.

Yeah I guessed so, but I only wanted an excuse to link to
these two faces I really like... :-)
