It looks very much like the official traffic sign font from France, Caractères L2. See page 49 of this.

And indeed it is. Thank you for that. Particularly nice how the center of the M comes down to a narrow point. And the first item up when googled is a free version by Frank Rausch. We’ll give it a shot.
