RSM Monogram - want critique

emilie

Hey all,

First real critique post for me... Can I get your opinions on this? It stands for "Robert Sainte-Marie". He's an interior designer friend of mine. I thought of including the hyphen but it made the S look somewhat like a F. Do you think I should raise the "m" a little? It looks a bit like it's falling to the right to me, I'm not sure. Any other comments?

Thanks!
Em

Monogram

Welcome Em:

I would say yes to raising the "m". I am reading an "f" even without a hyphen. I think you'll either need to put a little more curve into the "S" spine or extend the top curve just a bit.

Aloha!
Scott

I'm thinking maybe it's the angle that makes it look like an f but when I change it it kind of clashes from the rest. Will give your comments a shot =)

Thanks!
Em

Here is an update after trying some variations..I think it helps a little. Any more feedback?

What you have is well executed, but I think the r will be problematic for you. This form doesn't serve as much of a lead in since it relies on another letter to even begin! The lowercase script is also the source of trouble with the S vs f. These letters have tons of potential. If you have a copy of Fonts & Logos take a look at pages 108/109 and 234/235 for monogram ideas. If not I will pull a scan in the next few days if you like.

Randy

Hi Randy,

That'd be very appreciated, I never saw a lot of monograms and I don't own that book. I agree with you on the r, the fact it's inside the sloop also bugs me a little because it looks so "internetey". By letters having potential, did you mean rsm, RSM in general or what I have already?

Thanks!

Em

I also had this at the very beginning..though that S definitely looks like an f but at least the r doesn't begin on the S.

RSM1

Very elegant. But I couldn't see the "S" (an "F" even less though). If forced, I'd see a "d". Plus where you're extending the "r" that's starting to look like an "@"... I guess you could leave the "S" subtle, or if you want it more visible give it some curve in the spine, somehow.

Your second direction is cool too (and more "S"-visible) - I guess it depends what kind of interior design he does. Victorian woodwork or weathered flagstone?

hhp

Hmmm.. Forgive the S curve, it's really not there yet! It surely helps identifying it and keeping it from falling.

As for the version with the alternate r, I like the shapes overall but I feel like it's really about to fall and collapse to the right. I also messed some more with the initial direction (mostly cleaned it up) I liked the shapes but I don't want too much of the inky texture since I don't believe that fits with what he does.

Any feedback on this?

I like the top one; and I think the middle one can work if you make the head of the "S" stronger (and smoother) - but don't connect the "r" to the circle, it seems to make the "m" too isolated.

hhp

I like the stately, dignified look of the last logo, but it definitely reminds me of the "Samuel Adams" script. Alternately, I see a J rather than an S. What about using an uppercase R and connecting an extended leg to the spine on the M?

I think you got it right the first time, Em. For me it has the most energy and resolution.

greatings e'one! just a quickscrewdeformationatcoffeebreak to show the idea..

I'm back on that project with something new, let me know what you guys think! I need to see more of what he does to pick the right font for the r but I'd like to know which you think flow better graphically. Also, are you aware of any fonts that have a similar narrow long S? This one is rotated from Avalon. I remember seeing another one once but I can't recall the name of the font.

Thanks!

Btw, I'm aware this needs a lot of tweaking, it's just a quick new direction! =)

Em

I don't really see any connection, or rather correlation, between the "r"s and the "S". You'll need to unify them somehow

Variations

Here is the latest update on this project.

Comments anyone?

Thanks!
Em

I saw this thread for the first time this morning so I haven't read everything in it.

Just a quick comment: it seems to me that you latest update don't show the three letters anymore. Well, the S is visible, but not the r and the m.

On the whole, it now seems like a mystery, the spectator has to solve ... which is a drawback.

I think some of your first, calligraphic marks are very elegant.

A big question would be if your friend is a modern/contemporary interior designer or a classic/decorative type interior designer, or both. Yo

He tends to mix both styles. I showed him the recent direction (S with the more squared shape) and he really liked it. I believe I'm going to keep it this way (it didn't have to necessarily have to be a monogram but I wanted to give it a try). I'll post the next steps soon. It will probably be my first embossed project... can't wait!

yeah i agree with soren its not legible anymore and kinda looks like an arabic character right now.

i liked where the first few where going instead.

That totally looks like a sperm breaking out of an IVF lab.

hhp

It's turning more into a symbol than a monogram. His name will be written under to accompany it. Was there a name for a typographic work that displays all the letters of a word at the same time but less seperatly than a monogram? I can't remember...

Hrant, for your sperm remark.. It was actually a client requirement at first (to have a spermatozoid in the design) which I tried to bypass initially. :-)

Hello Emilie

i didn't read all the thread, but i went through all the designs you posted. The middle design in your 4th post is great (only the upper curve of "S" need some adjustment). My opinion is that the quality of the first designs is much higher than the latest.

More on this... Here is the last version I did. The lack of legibility ended up wearing out on me.

I'm wondering if anyone would know of a font similar to tarzana for these caps I'm using but more sober in general? For example, the capital E's are made like inverted 3. Any thoughts on this one?

Something from Tankard?

BTW, what about connecting the tail of the "R" with the tail of the sperm?

hhp

I like the contrast and little touch that adds to the whole. Hmm.. I checked Jeremy Tankard fonts, I like how Aspect has this little serif and the other letters are sobered up, thanks! At first I thought you meant this..http://www.tankard.org/... scary ;)RSM13

The thickness of the top of the S is very distracting to me. my eye is drawn directly to that. Also, the M just seems to be floating there without any real tie-in to the monogram.

All comments were good, thanks for the input! The project has been on hold for a while and I don't know if it will be finished. I will post more about it if anything evolves.
