InDesign Style Sheet problems

Hi - I hope someone can help with my problem here. Although I am not new to InDesign, I'm new to style sheets, but have found them very easy to use. I'm working on a magazine and have all my style sheets set up for headline, body, etc. I've inserted 8 new pages and on the first new inserted one, I imported my .doc and went to apply my styles and none of them apply correctly. In fact, not even close - they all look like my subhead when I apply them. The style does not have a + after it, so it thinks it's totally applied. When I open the style, it says it's 47 pt, etc., but the type is still 14 pt, etc. The styles are fine on the pages I created previously. Can anyone tell me what's going on? Thanks in advance for your help.

I guess there are character styles which override your paragraph styles.

Do you have a character style applied? I find that to be a "bug" when I am working with files imported from Word. Don't know why, but it happens.

With CS2 anyway, I find I sometimes have to use

Apply "style", Clear Overrides

Even though there is no plus (+) following the style name.

Well, it's certainly not a bug!
You may choose to replace these style in the import options or you can just delete the ones you don't need once the text is places.

If you hold down shift + option when you click on the paragraph style, it will override and clear any character styles or artifacts from Word.

I didn't say it was a bug either, Ralf. ;-)

But it *has* been an issue, and isn't exactly obvious when it happens to the uninitiated.

Are you using the "Basic Paragraph Style" as your paragraph style? I've noticed sometimes that customizing the "Basic Paragraph Style" won't format properly in certain situations, so I never use it. It is definitely annoying.

Right. One should never use any of the »Basic character/paragraph/object styles«, nor should one base a style on one of them. (Unfortunately, the latter this a default behaviour.)

I've discovered that if I open the .doc document in word and save as a text only (.txt) and import that file my style sheets will now apply properly. Gotta love Microsoft!

Of course, because this removes the paragraph and character styles.
You could also simply paste the text without styles.
