Does anyone know if the complete character set of L & C Hairline (ITC L & C Hairline) typeface is printed in any reference work (whether in print or out of print) and the name of any such reference works? I understand that this typeface is not currently available in digitized form. I am aware of two web sites with complete and partial character set appearing in low quality images, but prefer to see the complete character set of this typeface in print. Thanks.

if you can manage to track down a cd-rom of the old image club graphics typefaces its on there - although not quite as hairline as the photo lettering specimens...
Ray, I put a gif of something I whipped up in the Preview of FAP on my site.
Download it here:

It’s called LCHairline.gif
(Couldn’t upload/place images here.)

Bert,
Thanks very much. That is the most detailed version of it I have now except for the sample on some stationery dating from the early 1970's. Do you know if this is the Image Club Graphics version? As Justin comments, that version (and your image) is a thicker rendering (not as hairline) than what I have on the stationery.
Also, by chance do either of you or anyone know the typeface used on the Typophile site for topic headings such as for this thread? Thanks again.
Ray
I think the sample on Incipit's site is the most complete showing of the original:
http://www.incipit.com/typefaces.html
It doesn't contain a lot of characters that you find in present day digital fonts, but it also contains a lot of others that you don't. Some are downright whimsical, such as the dagger.
As for seeing the complete character set in print, many headline font specimen catalogs from the Seventies would have it. The kind to look for are ones produced by typesetting houses for their customers, rather than the ones produced by the film font manufacturers, such as VGC, which would usually only show one-line specimens.
Mark,
Yes, the INCIPIT site to which I was directed recently appears to have the complete character set, but the resolution of the image on that site is low. I am not sure where I would look for the 1970's headline font specimen catalogs. Thanks for the tip though.

Oak Knoll Books would be likely to have that sort of thing:
I have this font. I will look to see if the version I have has any alternates. I don't recall it having.
The version which I have has no alternates. It is the model of a PS Type 1 font from the early 90s. :^)

Timothy sells a lot of smaller specimens that Oak Knoll doesn't carry and may have the one you would like.
If Timothy doesn't have it and you just cannot find it, I'll be happy to provide you with a Hi-Res scan on CD from one of my old Visual Graphics catalogs. It has many alternates shown.
Miss Tiffany and majus,
Thanks for your information. Someone from this forum provided to me privately a 220k
tif file that displays the characters with many, but not all, of the alternates. It has all of the characters I am interested in. My original stationery from the early 1970's has twenty characters, most with the uppercase size about 3/4" high. What I don't have is any digital version. I suspect the version you have, Miss Tiffany, is that done by Image Club Graphics, which I understand is thicker than the original. Still it would be of interest to me.
Ray
Yes. My sample is from an ICG-interpretation.

Yes. My copy is from ICG.
Bert and Miss Tiffany,
I am guessing both of your font versions are for Mac. I would be curious to know if there are any Windows versions of the ICG interpretation of this font.
Ray
Hey, I can insert an image again… Must ahve been a Flash-glitch.

wow, that sample looks way too heavy for the L&C Hairline I loved and remember.
It was always meant for large display sizes, and as mentioned above, mostly film photo headline setters like VGC.
I think I have samples (not full character set) from ITC Big Black Book and Phototypositor single sample sheets.
Just as a point of interest -- I could not find L&C Hairline listed in the 1980 ITC Typeface Collection big black book, though ITC L&C Stymie Hairline is.
I found a one-liner sample of L&C Hairline in the 1972 VGC Typeface Collection catalog showing a very unique ampersand (classic lowercase et with oblique swash and ball terminal extended from the bar of lowercase e.
According to Incipit's notes, Lubalin and Carnase's design (c 1965) is owned by their estates, which makes me wonder if L&C Hairline was ever part of the ITC Collection.
If anyone can shed some light on this it would help tie up loose ends.
page 243 of Phil's Homage to the Alphabet has the hairline version + alternates. I might be able to manage a scan tomorrow if nobody else has it.
I received today Rookledge's Classic International Typefinder (2004 printing) and find this typeface on page 218. All uppercase and lowercase and numbers are displayed but no alternates or punctuation or symbols other than the ampersand. Also no information is given about the individual typefaces.
It would be interesting to see the Phil's Homage to the Alphabet version.
bjharvey,
That is exactly the typeface of my stationery heading and appears to have all the alternates, punctuation and symbols. Thanks so much!
Ray
Man, they just couldn't make up their minds on those f's, could they?
In case anyone goes looking for it, I'm taking Incipit's showing down as part of a site upgrade.
As far as I know, L&C Hairline was never an ITC release.
The original had alternate lowered punctuation for lowercase/x-height alignment.
Someone at this other forum:
http://www.myfonts.com/WhatTheFont/forum/viewthread.php?threadid=103823
claims that ITC L & C Hairline is now the correct name, but other than
this claim, I have not seen ITC associated with this font in my searches.
