The most common fonts for both pc and mac

Taina Numminen

Hello!
Where can I find the most reliable and up-to-date source for information in the web about the fonts mentioned in the subject?
Which default fonts are used, 99% guarantee, in all windows versions AND in all the mac os versions?

I'm making editable pdf-files and it would be nice if they could be opened in every computer without changes in font (pc to mac).

Thanks!

Why not embed the fonts? Providing they are set to 'editable embedding' you're fine. Most Microsoft supplied fonts and Adobe Originals are set this way - other vendors will license you editable embedding fonts for a small additional fee.

here is a little site that might be helpful to you:
http://typetester.maratz.com/

it shows windows defaults, mac defaults and a "safe list" for both.

Joe Clark posted something about this a month or two ago.

Wow, Macs get way better default typefaces. I mean, I'm not really surprised, except for how low things like Gill and Futura appear on the Windows list. Those seem like such standards.

I've found they also get a waaay better search function. On my new iMac, the little magnifying glass in the upper right corner, as best I can make out, searches filenames, subject headings, the contents of documents and e-mail, images, .pdf files, and gives you a definition from the dictionary with results in about the same time it would take to start a search in WIndows. This feature is kick-butt and I don't remember seeing anyone mention it. This has been pretty startling for me.

You'll always hear people talking about the big things that a Mac offers, but it's always the little things that make believers out of us :)

I’m not sure that’s so true now that Vista is shipping all those great new designs. Of course it seems like most Vista users are just downgrading to XP, but still…

...And Mac finally has Office '08 with all of those great new designs...

Oh, Geeeze! Would all you Mac lovers just get a room? :¬)

Doing good work with lousy fonts just makes you a better designer

So don't squander the opportunity, start using lousy fonts right away.

Yeah, I’m actually going to buy it just for the fonts :)

Then how come Swiss modernists never get good enough to stop using Helvetica for every damned thing?

:¬)

Swiss modernists are so old-hat. Did they even have 'puters?

Don't worry, I'm on the even more sad path of becoming an Open Source Linux nerd. Or so James thinks :P
