Book Design Typeface

FirkaHimself

I am designing a book for my mom who wrote a short biography on my grandpa and still can’t decide on the typeface I should use for the content.

*Information
He was a Polish immigrant who got captured in the second World War by the Germans for five years. He came to Canada afterwards where he started a family. He loved to fish and read history books.

I was thinking of using a script typeface for headings and a serif for the body. Any suggestions of typefaces that may relate to Polish roots or can tell a similar story to the information provided would be greatly appreciated.

For more ideas, I attached his family coat of arms.

From the limited information, a few possibilities for the title may be:

Radio
Silvermoon
Pablo

For text:
Atlantica

Hi Nik,

typefaces that may relate to Polish roots

in case your grandpa came from the Silesia region, then you might wanna have a look at Silesiana – a formal chancery, for headings.

F

For body copy, I can second Atlantica and add Storm Foundry’s Regent II, which has a marvelous Old World feel without hitting you over the head...plus Janson Text from Adobe (OpenType version with oldstyle figures)...and Linotype Sabon with oldstyle figures is always elegant and suitable for books. And ITC Bodoni Twelve if you want a more mid-19th-century look.

I really do appreciate all of the suggestions.

I have done a little more research and narrowed down my choices for the body copy either to be Janson Text or Spectrum MT. I am leaning more towards Spectrum but have a hard time trying to find a complementary typeface in a script face. Clairvaux was a possibility for chapter headings and the title page but it doesn’t seem to look appropriate. I may just end up choosing a sans serif to be safe.

Any more help would be great… either way I am sure I will be okay choosing.

Thanks again

Spectrum does indeed have oldstyle figures and I think it’s more elegant than Janson. I have always found Janson clunky, and the italics are kinda ugly.

Sabon is very nice, as are Columbus and Fournier.

You never get consensus here, go with your instinct.

Monotype Spectrum is too delicate and wimpy for snappy use below 11pt, and, crucially, it lacks default-loaded oldstyle figures; the roman ones are segregated in expert fonts, in the tedious old way. OpenType Janson much, much better. What about Linotype Sabon with oldstyle figures? And be sure to look at Joshua Darden’s Corundum, his re-think of Fournier.
