Fess up, Typophiles (typographic guilty pleasures)

Russell McGorman

I liked Typewriter From Hell (found it on a free bee site before I knew better) - until I found 1942 Report.

And Copperplate. It can be quite nice in the right place.

Rotis sans and semi sans, Rotis serif, but not the semi serif.

While laying out my college newspaper, tracking body text in and out by visible amounts ... and, horrifyingly enough, horizontally scaling the type by several percentage points. If we had something designed for that, like something by Unger, I’d feel better, but this is Miller — it’s too pretty to be treated like this :-(

I heart Souvenir. My classmates and I used it as the text face for our student magazine at university.

there was a time around 1993 or so that i used lithos.

Are you kidding me? I used Lithos Pro for the entire Tutankhamun LA campaign. It was a nice fit. Didn’t make me feel guilty for a second…

Like many hate/like threads, this is a pretty subjective topic... Not too different from favorite songs. One person’s guilty pleasure is another person’s best song of all time... :-)

Sheesh, what a bunch of puritans! Those are the typographic equivalents of getting excited at the sight of the gap between a woman’s glove and sleeve. You want guilty pleasures? Print out ITC Souvenir at 500pt on big sheets of paper and then roll around on them naked.
