Proper Python/RoboFab Installation on Mac OS x 10.5 Leopard?

Dan Reynolds

Hello,

I have a new MacBook Pro (intel) laptop. The OS is Mac OS X 10.5. The installed version of Python is 2.5.

I wanted to install RoboFab, but RoboFab’s site states that it only works with versions 2.3 and below. I went to a MacPython site to download an older version, but the builds say that these’ll only work with PowerPC processors.

Is there a way that I can replace my version of Python with an older version that will allow me to use RoboFab?

Thanks!
Dan

I have never even been able to get Robofab working on my Tiger version PowerPC G5.

My former laptop was an iBook G4, and I had it running just fine. Now, no luck so far…

Try this double click installer getpython-2.3.zip; this will compile from the sources and in the end, you need to provide your installation password. Some patience is required. If this works tell me (I am on a powerpc). Michel.

Thanks!

I guess that it worked… the message I got after I typed in my password was:

sudo: make: command not found
logout

[Process completed]

But I ran the install script for RoboFab before I realised which version of Python I was using :(
Now, when I try to re-install using 2.3 (if I have that now…) I get the following message

>>> python2.3 /Applications/RoboFab/RoboFab_1.1.1_PlusFontTools/install.py
File "", line 1
python2.3 /Applications/RoboFab/RoboFab_1.1.1_PlusFontTools/install.py
^
SyntaxError: invalid syntax
>>> robofab
Traceback (most recent call last):
File "", line 1, in
NameError: name 'robofab' is not defined

I’m sorry for asking such pesky questions… just hoping someone else has been through this already!

If sudo or make are not available, then nothing was installed.

I’m running FLS5 in 10.5 on an Intel Mac, and Robofab seems to work, although I haven’t used it much since upgrading. FLS doesn’t tell me what version of Python is installed. I didn’t do anything special in FLS when I upgraded to 10.5.

hmm. thank you, though.

hello dan,

have you tried this option?

If you’re on OSX Tiger (10.4) or Leopard (10.5), and you want to install RoboFab and its dependencies (FontTools, Numeric), for use in FontLab 5.0x, then you can use the RoboFab Installer for OSX, FontLab 5.0x.

try asking here.

cheers,
- gustavo.

That is perfect! Everything works now. Thank you very, very much.

Dan

Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard includes both Python 2.3 and 2.5

FontLab Studio uses 2.3.

A.

I still can’t get Robofab to show up in FontLab. Where should it show up?

ChrisL

Robofab shows up in the same directory where you you have all your macros.

I had trouble before, but everything solved when I typed python2.3 in the terminal before installing.
