Avant Gardener

Jan Erdmann

Well that’s cute, I’d probably buy one if I didn’t loathe Avant-Garde that much.

david R

That’s quite cool but for the fact that one couldn’t think of too many typefaces less appropriate than Avant Garde to express the idea of a garden.

Having said that, I’ve never really found out why it’s hated so much.

I don’t know. it’s hard to explain. I think it’s ugly.

I hate it almost as much as comic sans.

almost.

David R

Sure.

I have a similar problem with Kabel

Why are the ’E’s different widths on the shirt?

- Lex

I didn’t notice that!

Probably to align with that ’T’ ligature thing on top.

Well, I’d love to get one for my wife.

She’s a keen gardener who doesn’t understand my desire to buy typophile.com tees or Helvetica on DVD (but is quite happy, if that’s what I want to do).

Actually you CAN buy these right on that site. If you click one of the images you’ll get to where you can order. It’s all brasilian, though.

Think it’s interesting that they took an existing logo (more than using the typeface) as a basis, and added the NER. Wonder if they know about the origin.

I had spotted that Jan, unfortunately, my Brazilian is non-existant and Google Translate doesn’t seem to work with the basket.

If anyone has seen these in Europe, I’d be glad to hear about it.

Jan, any particular aspect of its origins you were thinking of?

No particular aspect, I was just thinking of the Avant Garde magazin logo in general.

according to me, the Avant-Garde magazine logo was, and remains, the only application where this typeface actually looked nice. And I think that was also Herb Lubalin’s opinion.

dr

Well, actually first there was the logo only and then a typeface was made from it.

Why all the hate?

End the hate.

Now that you post all those images, it no more looks as if the T-shirts reproduce the orginal very faithfully:

...And of course the covers look great, thank you! I had seen only two of them before.

Is that Ava Gardener on that first Avant Garde magazine cover?

Cheers!

“Is that Ava Gardener...?”

Now, wouldn’t that have been something?

However it looks like the never-very-avant garde Marilyn Monroe.

Travis uses Avant Garde for their logo
