It's interesting.
The judges' choice was designed "just right", but the most *popular* ones are (tasteful) instances of under/over-design.

hhp

What do you mean by "under/over design?" I'm not being defensive, just curious. Althouhgh I will mess your grill if you step. Dang.

Anyway, for those who are interested, there are a couple of alternates to my design (24.002) here. I still prefer the original myself.

What does under/over-design mean? I guess to me it means that it looks (although not necessarily *is*) designed too sloppily/obsessively. For example, a lot of people think Barcelona is over-designed (although I personally think it's the best city in the world). BTW, I'm not sure what "grill" you're talking about, but hopefully -for you- it's not the one on my car, 'cause you'd have to catch me first, and if by some freak of nature you did, you'd regret it... Hundreds of Americans agree. :-)

As for your design, the orginal is definitely the best, and although I only really like 18.008 of all the ones we could pick from (I triple-voted for it), 24.002 is the only other one I would actually buy, if only to support Typophile. Tanya's is cool, but it's just too far from my [warped] sense of style.

Under/Over? This is interesting 'cause a friend and I have been having a three year-long "how do you know when something is actually done" argument.

I've always thought of "under-designed" as being something that has that look of incompletion. Overdesigned is easier; you could subtract and be better off than when you started. Or... it looks as though every single trick has been used in its creation just for the sake of something, showing off, something?

hee hee - loved the "grill" comments Hrant. Just what do you mean by "hundreds of Americans agree"?...Is the "grill" slang a canadian thing. I love a bit of country and cultural pride. By the way - are a bunch of you's guys (chicago talk) from canada. I'm new to the forum overall - but I plan to be involved regularly.

I totally agree w/ tracy - sometimes - you just need to lose another element...

it should definitely be either the original or the combined graphic on the back. I really can't figure why the choices were boiled down to what they were. whatever, yours is among my favorites anyway, Graham, nice piece of work!

Yeah, all I wanted was "California Job Case" on
the front of a tee. Why can't I vote for it? Write-ins?

> all I wanted was "California Job Case" on the front of a tee.

And all I wanted was one my designs, but swapping out typophile.com for The MicroFoundry...
Come on, Stephen.

Hmm. I think you should be able to write that in.
But I'm talking about a write-in campaign that
might get some votes. POW!

Get enough signatures, and anything's possible.

wow here's a thread I missed. kind'a awkward. I guess mine is the "over-designed" one we're referring to eh?

I chose, tweaked and arranged the faces, but what "overly-designed" aspects you may find all lay in the faces themselves - I wouldn't think its in the design. the arrangement is justified center and that's about it. Elements aren't thrown about at all. - I thought it would *read* very clearly to typophiles. I was thinking about the harley-davidson emblem/patch thing. let's ride, band together in our bad-•••, coded, shirts. the way t-shirt design started...for a team, a uniform, worn to identify/show-off what you like, and what community/club you belong to. I specifically did not want it to be simple. I definately don't hold any bauhaus memberships but I understand having a purpose for each element or arrangement of.

I do like the California job case too. Funny - the case itself with all its mysterious arrangement of boxes, we knew was designed so with some purpose and yet left such confusion. My Grandmother still has one filled with knick knacks above the sink. - I always wondered why why why those shapes and sizes.

NB: the link to 38.021 shows the first submission that had been revised. The correct design is posted deep inside day 38 of the original competition.

A friggin' POW is what you're gonna be if you ever set foot in SoCal, mister... ;-)

> I specifically did not want it to be simple.

Good, good. Simplicity is over-rated.

> My Grandmother still has one filled with knick knacks

And my parents have one filled with D&D miniatures I painted. I found out years later what the hell that funny box was really for.

> I guess mine is the "over-designed" one we're referring to eh

Does that make mine the under designed one? I did obsess about making the space between the type and the edge of the rectangle exactly one half the height of the type.

> I was thinking about the harley-davidson emblem/patch thing. let's ride, band together in our bad-

eh eh whats all this aboot. careful wif dem fightin werds merican, I's got some attack beavers and I ain't afraid to usem.

keep your beavers to yourself. that goes for all of you.

I didn't mean any fightin werds.

I think my problem is that I just can't bring myself you use smileys.

I hear you, Graham. I have the same fear. :/

that was supposed to be "to use smileys"

>I didn't mean any fightin werds.

come on now, i know you were joking. ditto for the smileys. i guess i'm just too cool. (sarcastic face/type thingy here). your beavers are scary, but what about moose? you have those up there, right?

T-Shirts should be over/under!
What's the point of wearing a shirt that people don't take a second look at ;-)
