Managing type on a PC

Brock French

Suppose there existed a program that allowed me to manage and sort my typefaces on a PC by publishing date and/or some kind of regional influence. What would that program be called?

by publishing date and/or some kind of regional influence

Are you talking about Font Explorer (FE)? Not to be confused with the rather new FontExplorer X (FEX)! The former can
[f]ind fonts fitting each historical era and [s]elect a mix of emotions and impressions and find the fonts that suit them all.

Yet, I don’t think this app is suited for managing fonts. For that, the latter is the right thing – however the Windows version of that is currently not available due to revision.

There’s a FAQ on the Best Font Management.

Though there are tags like ‘designer’ or ‘description’ in FEX, you have to do the sorting yourself, I’m afraid.

Typograf allows sorting by file (default), name, directory, family, size, date, copyright, number of kerning pairs and width.

...fontexplorer x has very flexible sorting abilities, but suggest that you sort your font into folders by hand, then drop them into the program, which will treat them as sets...If you go with fe x be sure to uncheck the “manage font files” option at the advanced preference panel...

Great guys, thanks a lot. The follow up to this question is: Is it acceptable or desirable to rename file names?

Until Linotype fixes it, I don’t recommend font explorer for windows. It can cause serious problems with your pc.

Is it acceptable or desirable to rename file names?

It’s probably not a good idea to do this.

Any thoughts on Suitcase for Windows?

i’ve used suitcase on windows and it was fine, worked as well as the mac one.
