Serif Titling Type for 15 Central Park West

Michael Yanega

Hi Folks,

This was from an ID question I was stumped on. The typeface is a serif that reminds me of ITC Usherwood, but is different in a number of ways. It resembles some of Les Usherwood's other fonts too, but it isn't anything I think I have seen before. It is used for navigation and titling on the site for 15 Central Park West. It shows up on the covers of their Brochures, and inside some of them as well. It was from a brochure that I took the attached screenshot.

Anyone recognize it?

Thanks,
- Mike

Mike,

Acrobat is telling me it is called "Opera".

Michel

Thanks Michel, but I can't find a font by that name. Do you recognize it?

- Mike Yanega

> Do you recognize it?

I am afraid not, and I can find no useful information in the file (like a copyright).

The Jaspert book shows a typeface called 'Opera' that was designed by Adrian Frutiger in 1960, but it does not look like this font. This is still a mystery unless we can find a font with this name.

This font is starting to keep me awake. (It's not even 4 AM here.) The small full serif on the A seems like one of the most distinctive, and nagging, features of this font. It resembles old 19th century typefaces, but I've been through all of Jaspert's book, and McGrew's, and the Rookledge Typefinder. I even looked through all Goudy's works. The only thing remotely close to the A is Administer/Minister, and that's about the only part that resembles this sample.

The only thing that I can find about 'Opera' on the web is that it's a Norwegian Browser that Microsoft was trying to buy.

I'm going to try to go back to sleep. I hope someone can ID this thing, because I can't believe this Real Estate developer would have a custom font designed.

- Mike Yanega

Given what they are charging for apartments in that building, it wouldn't surprise me at all if they have commissioned a custom font.

Heh, heh. You have a point Patty, but I'm still hopeful we can ID this.

- Mike Yanega

Well, I even tried using Identifont, and it came up with a fairly close (but no cigar!) selection -- Fairplex Wide.

The K is wrong, and the W is not stepped, as two of the most obvious differences. At least the general feeling is pretty close.

Any other ideas?

- Mike Yanega

> Any other ideas?

Well, the booklets use Mrs Eaves, and Fairplex is also from Emigre (edit: in fact Suzana Ličko). Coincidence?

So you think maybe a Fairplex customization? I would like to confirm that some way.

- Mike Yanega

Nope, I don't think so.

Yves, do you mean you don't think it was based on Fairplex? Do you have any ideas about what it is?

- Mike Yanega

Neither, unfortunately. I'll refrain from useless commentary from now on. :^D

I have, too, no ideas.
Yet, for my eyes, it has definitely litte in common with Fairplex.
Look at the W and others but basically its atmosphere is different.
One who likes to do a modification on an existing font wouldn’t like to change the W in a case like that.

By the way, look quite good this font.

Stefan

Mike,
what about asking dbox, they should know it, being the designers of the site.

Stefan, I understand your point. I thought the W could be made from two V's, but I agree that Fairplex is probably only similar in some details.

Florian, that's a good idea. I had found out that Zeckendorf Marketing was the one who prepared the ad campaign, including the printed materials, but I had trouble finding a contact to ask about it. My first try at dbox didn't get me to any menu I could read -- just nice photographic panoramas, a la the Park views at the 15 CPW site. So I have restarted with a new browser to see if I can get farther.

I'll let you know if I learn anything. This one is getting to me.

- Mike Yanega

It's very similar to Grand Central from Font Bureau.

Yes, it does resemble it, especially in feeling. The W, R and A do not match, but the rest at least seem similar. I am still awaiting a reply from the dbox folks.

- Mike Yanega

I want to bump this back up in the list. There has been no reply yet from dbox, so there may not be any help from them.

Anyone else have any ideas about this antique-looking serif?

On the other hand, all the brochures end with "Design by Pentagram".

Hi all-

I've been trying to track this one down as well and was led to this forum. I can tell you that Pentagram does indeed do custom fonts, and for lower profile projects than this. Which would explain why no one can find it...

Eric

Hi Eric,

I appreciate the information. I had still had this one nagging in the back of my mind. I may just write to them, and see if they will at least give me a name for it.
