If you google {edited by moderator} and you get a whole slew of sites selling it.

Dig a little deeper and it seems to be bunch of maybe Russian sites selling software cracks for big discounts. Get the Adobe Font Collection for $30. CS Premium Suite for $75, etc.

The big boys, no doubt, will be checking into this.

I was just pointing out it was bigger than initially implied. I was pretty sure the thread would be deleted as soon as a moderator saw it.

This looks like a new trend in piracy, with dotcom domains blatently selling all kinds of stuff that you'd think they'd be low-profile with. Not a good thing.

Anything digital is available on the web in 3 clicks. Nothing new.

I'm surprised that the agency that does the domain registry can't, or won't, shut those domains down. Or have they given up?

Yes, but we don't need to be spreading the word for the pirates. Especially on a site where so many of our users are making some or all of their income creating the fonts that these guys are stealing.

With all respect to you Paul---aww give Dennis a break. Chiding him for his contribution is like making excuses for not putting your foot down when it counts. If typophile's moderators have any real guts at dealing with piracy, threads like this that link to pirated font sources would be simply be deleted without discussion.

There's nothing to discuss. Just get rid of it. There is no excuse for strealing fonts, and there is no excuse for not deleting posts by those who support it.

My point: be firm but fair. Trust everyone but cut the cards.

Is it because it will happen anyway and everyone who wants to pirate fonts already knows where to go. If not, I could make some suggestions on where to go.

The moderators here are fair to a fault in leaving posts up so that all sides of a discussion can be heard. Editing direct links and reminding a poster not to do such a thing is probably the fairest thing that could be done.

James had it right though...be nice to Dennis. He only had good intentions, and was in no way condoning illegal actions.

Yes.

What matters to me, as a moderator, is that anyone can point back to Typophile as the location at which they found the information to begin with .... that is what matters. I might be pretty hardcore about this stuff, but there is just no other way to be. If anyone here finds something they deem questionable email me. I have contact with many foundries and can get the information to the right people.

But please don't post it here. Typophile has managed to stay pretty clean and if I have anything to say about it it will remain clean.

Oh, and I don't apologize for removing links, I just remove them. It isn't new that we don't support piracy so having a link removed shouldn't surprise people and if it does don't take it personally. And, you can always email the moderators to ask why.

Actually, everyone doesn't know. People wonder, but not everyone knows where to go unless they start wasting a lot of time searching. Let's make it just a bit harder to pirate for both the experts and the naifs, shall we?

I made a mistake in pointing out here that the problem was bigger than it appeared, rather than to a moderator privately I guess. I expected it to be a moot point since the last time this kind of thread was deleted completely.

Alright. Everything has been accounted for and explained now. Don't let it trouble you Dennis. We need threads like this to establish Typophile policy.
