Self-Image Problem

Davide Gi

Hey everybody!

I’ve been struggling with my own corporate image recently. I feel as though I’ve HIT my logo which is in Helvetica, but can’t seem to find a typeface for the body text. Although it may seem weird to say, I’m not a fan of helvetica as a body text. Not because it doesn’t work, but I feel that I’ve seen it a trillion times used badly, and it seems just so standard.

I’ve been using APEX Sans as my body text for my current image. I have to say, I really enjoy the way its working for me.

Is there a way to marry Helvetica as my logo and Apex as my body text. They are very differant SANS, but I forget is Sans+Sans is a no-no & wanted to see what masters (you guys) say.

Also, feel free to comment on the card design.

Thanks a lot in advance for the much needed help! :)

Why do you feel Helvetica “hits” for you? The difficulty today is that Helvetica is so often used and seen that it does not create an identity. What is it about you as a designer that is unique and what face speaks to that?

ChrisL

Well I chose helvetica because I’m a one person & freelance designer, so I feel that keeping a simplistic logo might reflect that I am a smaller company. The opposite of a giant corporation. Maybe this direction isn’t as strong as it should be.

What makes me unique as a designer is my italian heritage, which I try to market (there is an E at the end of my name.. Davide). Everyone always thinks thats very cool. At the same time, I don’t want to SCREAM that there is an e in my name by making it another color or something.

Thanks for the feedback so far! I really need to get this done SOON!

I remember seeing Addison hall http://addisonhalldesign.com/ on typophile and I really like his work and Identity. I like the typeface he uses also is great. I like his simplistic approach as well. Website is great too! :)

I really like this free typeface i found called union. Is there a typeface similar to this, because union only comes with regular and bold.

Check font.jpg on the first post.

As far as i remember FF Olsen is the “real” version.

Union is a wonderful typeface. However it is NOT (contrary to a lot of links found on the internet) a freely licensed typeface. It was a typeface designed specifically for the Denmark government and licensed to said government agencies only.

ok well, olsen it is I guess...

I posted an older biz card layout ive done>>>>>>old.jpg check first post

That one looks better than the Helvetica version.

old.jpg?

Yup, old.jpg.

Any more comments on it? Too boring maybe?

Again, what is it about you that you want to convey? Right now, it seems you are a bit timid about what that might be. Regarding the Italian angle, why does that matter to your clients? Identity is about defining who you are, what you would like to convey about yourself, and then reflecting that visually. It is a design problem. How would you design an identity for a client?

ChrisL

What don’t you like about your old card? Maybe that’s the question to ask yourself first.

Personally, I like the old version better too. If it ain’t broke...

I personally like the font.jpg the most. I like how simple the layout of the card is. High legibility and minimal distraction.

David—Don’t forget a logo should be designed for retention. From the Bauhaus School of Design, form follows function, is what I mean.

I think I’m not 100% about what I want to convey and that might be the problem. Most importantly, I want to say: (1) I am a one-person design firm (2) Young & “modern”, yet still reliable (3) I typically have a clean and “minimalist” “style” (notice the brackets for lack of better words).

Old.jpg is NOT my original business card, but simply one of the versions of my card I have created.

I am quite comfortable with it typographically, but I think it lacks a certain unique element.

>I am quite comfortable with it typographically, but I think it lacks a certain unique element.
Yes true, both versions are not remarkable. Think about the “certain unique element” and forget about typography for the moment. I know it’s hard to do “self-CD”, maybe a colleague could do the job for you, with a good and deep briefing …

Is it unique when placed in the pages of a grpahic design business card annual in the self promotion section? No.

Is it unique when placed next to 99% of other business cards out there...who are likely folks you’re going to target for business? I’d say yes...by the mere fact that it’s thoughtfully typeset. Maybe that’s enough?
