London College of Communications,

Jake,

Hi Typophile friends,,
I have initial plans to further my studies in London College of Communications, however they dont offer BA. Just wondering if anyone here would know of any infomations of schools in which I would be greatly exposed to letterpress, printmaking and so on..

Thanks,

I don't how much exposure you'd get to specifically to letterpress, but they have the facilities at Reading University.

Hi T Bones,
I wouldnt know how much I would be exposed to letterpress either in LCP, but Reading University seems really intense. Thanks for your infomation, nevertheless,

LCC has BA courses (and letterpress courses, exposure to it is something you can seek), what course are you looking for?

Tim

Hi Timd,
I'm actually interested in the Graphic Design, Project or Graphic and Fine Print Image-making courses. However, currently I only hold a diploma in Visual Communications. I would like to know more about the modules in school.

Jake,

You can study letterpress at CSM (induction in yr1), other than this, there aren't any courses per se that specialise in letterpress at BA level really.

Hi alphapeta,
Thanks for your advice. I really didnt know about that. Would you mind sharing your education experience with me?

Jake,

It’s over 20 years since I studied there so I cannot advise you accurately, contact the college or, if possible, visit. However, when I was there it was possible to use any of the college facilities.

Hi Jake –

I studied on the MA at CSM. There is a letterpress dept. there, which, if you can get in with Nick (the technician) can be very beneficial. You also have the added bonus of Phil Baines and Catherine Dixon as tutors there. I recall a few years ago when LCC was LCP they were getting rid of a lot of letterpress, not sure where it went.

If you wanted to learn letterpress at BA, you would have to probably take it up as a personal endeavour. A friend of mine did a lot of it on her BA at CSM, regardless of this, you'll have to also study every other area of the graphic arts like every other BA.

Perhaps take a look outside of London. I know that The Cambridge School of Arts have letterpress.

You will probably find presses all over, but your best bet, and probably your best resource is London.

Hi alphapeta,
Thank you for sharing your experiences with me. It means alot to me. I'm a fresh diploma graduate and all these BA and MA admission information confuses me. I'm still open to options. But of course, I do want to learn the techniques of letterpress. Being in a forgein place scares me. By the way, your MA at CSM is only a period of 1 year?
