Fonts that clip the tops off their a's

HyannisSound

Hi. Long time listener, first time caller.

I have a client who hates the overhanging terminal on the lower case "a" and has requested that I use a sans serif font without said terminal in creating her brand. In my rather small font collection I'm only finding Futura and House Chalet NineteenEighty having truncated terminals on the a. Does anyone out there have any other suggestions that I might consider? Many thanks in advance.

Neutraface, Avant Garde, Bauhaus, Stone Informal, Proxima Nova for starters. Also many italics have that too, of course. Maybe you could draw the letter yourself?

Do you mean a single story 'a'? There are hundreds of typefaces with this variant. Here are some of the better:

FF Super Grotesk
Drescher Grotesk
Bryant
FF Advert
Sassoon
Garage Gothic
Geometric 415 (AKA Metro)
FF QType
FF Schulbuch
Berlinsans
Proxima Nova (alt)

It is also often found in the italics of most sans serifs.

are you looking for a sanserif font? are serifs, scripts acceptable?

>I have a client who hates the overhanging terminal on the lower case “a”

What a nutjob.

Thanks, Stephen - single story is the expression I was looking for. I knew I'd goof up the nomenclature on my first post. Thanks for your suggestions. I really like Proxima Nova.

But looking like Avant Garde is the winner.

Many thanks for all your comments. Especially nutjob. I have another client who is a baker and hates circles. Always on the lookout for square muffin trays.

'I have a client who hates the overhanging terminal on the lower case “a”'

What a nutjob.

It gets on my nerves sometimes to. And some people here hate the single story version to the point of boycotting italics.

Avant Garde? Makes sense. :-/

> hates circles

Well, at least his donuts must be interesting.

Certainly, there are much better reasons to boycott italics.

hhp

If I can discern the words, I can't think of a reason to boycott. I lean towards some things, away from others, but boycott very few abstractions.

Hyannis, please, get some new clients! :)

Is hate the new dislike?

I hate dislike.

Have you tried reasoning with her, i.e., telling her that a single-storey lowercase a might be easily confused with an o? :-)

Huh I found that Monotype has a single storey Gill Sans version. I like it because it's not as geometric as most single storey fonts.

Hypatia Sans Pro has a single story a as stylistic alternate

Square donuts sounds like a fad waiting to happen.

> But looking like Avant Garde is the winner.

I hope that this does not lead to text being used in AG. My current college had a nice wordmark built using Avant Garde Light, and the braintrust in marketing later decided that for "branding" they would use the similar Century Gothic as the default font for everything. The website, the college calendar (in 9 point, in many places) and all brochures.

And I wonder why there is no design program at this college.

What Don said. Avant Garde would be fine for a logo (that's what it was first created for), but please please please don't set large quantities of text in it, ever.

Cheers,

T
