Good online portfolios?

fredcastle

Flash portfolios have to be REALLY elegantly simple for me to bother looking through them.

Most of these seem to suffer from the same Flash issues:

- loading bars everywhere
- giant sweeping page transitions
- mystery meat navigation
- annoying sounds

I’m a big fan of portfolios like this:

Yea, this is maybe extreme (everything on one page) but it makes it very easy for me to quickly scan the body of work.

One of the few Flash-based portfolio sites that I’ve found nice is this one:

http://www.geredonovan.com/

A little gratuitous/cliche with the scrolling text transitions, but, overall, lightweight and not crazy on the special effects.

I also like Ty’s (haven’t seen him in here in a while) from a pure minimalist standpoint:

I agree with you, Darrel. Flash needs a light touch for me to enjoy it.

Love the photographs on Ty’s site. I’ve added him to my rss reader.

Sharon

Hey thanks for the shout out Darrel and the kind words Sharon. Fred, a couple of nice flash sites worth checking out include:

Nyne designed by Templin Brink: http://www.wear-nyne.com/

Noe Design: http://www.noedesign.com/2005/index.html

Duffy & Partners: http://www.duffy.com/duffy/index.aspx

TY

http://analog.sys.is/ ...totally agree. I loved the one-page concept.

The Manchester based magazine Rant! had a flash website a while ago which allowed the user to turn pages exactly as you do with a printed magazine (it reminded vaguely the http://www.geredonovan.com/ site except that it was much more literal, you had to turn the page with the cursor and it was a great feel. The page turned gradually from the bottom right corner until you had moved the cursor to the left side then the page would gently fall and the next page was gradually reveal. Brilliant. Not incredibly intuitive but extremely rewarding. The site doesn’t exist anymore, has anyone seen this effect somewhere else by any chance?

“has anyone seen this effect somewhere else by any chance?”

Yep. Pretty much everywhere. Look at any retail store that has a weekly circular...they’ll often post their ad as a ’flippable’ flash file. It was cool the first time I saw it years ago, and even then only for a few minutes. Now it’s just inane. If I want to flip pages, I’ll pick up that magazine on the table thank-you-very-much. ;o)

If you don’t have a copy of Blake’s Notebook to hand (this does take some time to load, go and make a cup of tea)

Sleazenation – another magazine which has folded used to have something similar for a while.

Tim

Ffffffffffffine!!!
Yes it was pretty much like Tim’s link but much faster and with less fuss (without all the gimmicks underneath etc.)
