analogue clock typeface

What sans serif and serif fonts have you noticed on wall clocks? I am not good at distinguishing a font by number only. Any suggestions?

Which wall clocks? Where?

I have one from Crate & Barrel with (surprise, surprise) Helvetica numbers. I was in the store the other day, though, and saw one with Interstate.

Oooops, sorry. I did not realise. I'm in the UK so UK ones. Do French or Italian or Sweedish etc clocks have numbers in their language or are they English numbers? Sorry if i'm being too naive, I haven't really been aborad to notice. Just curious.

This is a wind-up right? (not sorry for the pun).

French, Italian and Swedish clocks have the same numbers as UK clocks. It's the same alphabet but with a few accented characters.

haha, not a wind up! Not at all. I have never been to places outside UK in and around Europe. So how am I meant to know?!? Ok, so UK analogue clocks or watches. What kind of typeface do they tend to use. Is there any specific reasons as to why they would use certain typefaces? I've usually seen more of san serif on wall clocks and more of serif on watches. Or am I wrong? Educate me! I'd like to know. Curiosity never killed the cat did it? :)

Post a sample of the clock you're looking for, and we'll identify it.

A wall clock will have whatever typeface the designer chooses to put on it. I've seen sans- and serif faces on both wristwatches and wall clocks.

I have a wall clock in the kitchen and a table one in the living room (wedding presents years ago) from the same series, "baskerville", and yes, they're set in Baskerville Old Face.

Missgiggles, most clock fonts here in Sweden are set in Exocet, but instead of the number 7 we use the symbol Æ because of a treaty signed with Denmark in 1974. My brother Erik lives in glorious Nippon (Japan) and there they use Roman numbers on their wall clocks as well as their digital wristwatches. But don't be confused, lol, their clocks read counterclockwise because their language reads in a different way than English.

double post sorry :)

'counter clockwise'? What does that mean?

Counter clockwise = anticlockwise = the other way around to the usual western clock direction

French, Italian and Swedish clocks have the same numbers as UK clocks

Well, this is not strictly true. In some places in Italy they use olives, cheese and anchovies.

And in Scotland, they have sheep.

@ OptimusChyme,
sorry to say that, but the invention of clocks which run counter-clockwise is something we Bavarians claim copyright for!
And certainly there is no way to go without squeezing a gemütliche Fraktur on it!

Btw, Wikipedia holds some interesting thoughts on the question why clock faces labelled with roman numerals often show IIII instead of IV.

Sehr gemütlich!
Linda: that makes a lot of sense.

hahaha very funny!
