The serif is probably Matthew Carter's Fenway, a favorite secret of magazine designers.

But I'm not sure why I'm helping because I think this sort of "advertorial" concept is an assault on readers.

Anything kinda close will do. It they really want it to look 100% identical they should just have the magazine's art director do it. Plus, as Stephen said, the concept of advertorials is kinda shady, so I think it's ok if it's not identical.

But its doesn't matter anyway the font shown is not Fenway- the lower case o has a vertical stress where as in Fenway the o is modulated kinda 'crunchy'.

The closest I find so far is < a href="http://bowfinprintworks.com/SerifGuide/serifsamples/serif_a/augustea_full.gif">Berthold Augustea. The 'g' still seems off, but most other letters match fairly well, including the 't'. If close is good enough, I think that's a candidate. If the sample had a G, E or R I think it would be easier to pin down.

Yves, I'm not a fan of The Foundry's web site, either.

But I e-mailed them last week with a question about licensing Foundry Monoline, and Freda Sacks got back to me within a few hours with prices, PDFs, format options, and licensing details.

I encourage anyone interested in licensing Foundry fonts to drop them a line.

Except for the 't' which seems to have a relatively straight top, this seems close to some Century faces, or Centennial.

What's your theory Yves? This one has me stumped, and I agree Augustea isn't the answer, even though I thought onlythe italic 'g' looked bad.

Make it easy on yourself. The serif is by Matthew Carter, and the closest Carter font is already on your computer: Georgia.

Carl, you may be right about it being by Carter, but I don't believe it's Georgia. Look at the K. The Georgia K has legs that meet at the stem, the posted sample doesn't. The 'g' from Georgia has a straight ear, and this sample doesn't seem to. The W in Georgia has no middle serif, and this one does. I think we are still looking for an answer (or else a sharper sample image).

Thanks. That's a much clearer image. I can see why the Augustea italic is all wrong, even though the Roman match is better than anything else I have found so far.

As for Carl's belief that this is by Matthew Carter, it must have been designed after 2001 if he's right, because I have a book of all Carter's work before then, and this is not in there.

Can anyone who knows Swedish write to the site and see if they will help with this question? (My browser can't even open the site -- grrr.)

Thanks for that link to the e-magin site, loremipsum. I had not seen this magazine before, and it's always instructive to see one's types in use.

Peter was correct in his original post, the text sans is Apex New, and not Apex Sans. The numerals being used are the default hybrid/Scotch style, which are working well in running text.

I wish that I could help with the text serif ID, beyond saying that it's not Miller or Mercury. In the sample inline above, there is a little bit of italic, which is very helpful. I'm not as good at IDing as I used to be, but I would say that one should look to older faces, perhaps something in the 5-15 year-old range.

I got an e-mail back from Cherie Cone at Carter & Cone, and she said that Matthew Carter had a look at the samples and doesn't recognize the typeface either. They'd like to know if we figure out what it is.

I just wanted to let you know that I sent an email to SAS Media who is producing the magazine. Hopefully they can help us, since this seems to be a quite difficult pin.

OK, well I guess that answers that one. Thanks Marek and Artur. I have written to HFJ to see if they can provide or point us to a complete sample. I'm not sure what to expect through. I think it's odd that their own site doesn't show other fonts they have designed for their clients, even if they are not for general sale. I had no luck finding samples anywhere else on the web either. I guess the samples posted here are the best (only) ones I've seen.

Chronicle typeface is also used in Manchester Evening News and Västra Nyland (a regional Swedish-language newspaper in Finland).

Thanks for the information 'loremipsum'. I've seen the Wikipedia List and am hunting down samples from some of those. Nice of you to think of the Sans Font ID Guide -- you're right I don't have that one (Olisipone, from FTF). There is an update to that Guide in work right now, to bring in the the newer Sans from the recent FontBook and Indie Fonts 3 book.

And just to finish off what started this whole tread. According to SAS Media any advertorials are't allowed to include fonts identical to the ones in the magazine.

"Advertisement which, in the publisher's opinion, are liable to be confused with editorial text will not be accepted."

So they don't give up the names of their fonts. (I didn't know that when I started this tread)

I have to disagree about the comment that two of the samples show 'Arnhem' by Fred Smeijers. The R in the 'outlined by flames' article is not the right R for Arnhem; in the 'Most seasoned travelers' article the K is not the right one for Arnhem. In both cases they do match the other samples, which we have been assured is 'Chronicle'.
