Websites That Use Type Well

Peter G.

Web typography is surely not as sophisticated as it's printed cousin (or should it be mother?), but nevertheless, some web designers have worked hard to do the best they can with what they have. So I'm curious what websites the type community thinks make the best use of type on the web. I'll start.

A List Apart takes full advantage of the best of the web typefaces. Sure they're just Georgia and Verdana, but when used well as they are here, they add real sophistication to a design.

Khoi Vinh’s Subtraction proves that type can look great on the web if used properly. Here a single font (Arial) is leveraged to its full potential with the aid of a strong underlying grid layout.

What sites inspire you to use type better on the web?

http://ourtype.be/ (type foundry)
https://store.joyent.com/ (retail shop)
http://www.flag.cc/ (lettering more than type, but just damn fun)

BTW, Subtraction's CSS specifies Helvetica first, but perhaps it's not installed on your system.

Actually, Stephen, I checked Subtraction's CSS before posting and it has Arial listed first, at least at the root level:
html, body {font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;

Well, I'll be. That's funny. He is in love with Helvetica.

(Warning: I'm on a Mac using Safari, so what I see might not be what you'll see.)

I really like these two, Mint and SimpleBits. In the latter, the use of Goudy Old Style for the ampersand (yes, it's not an image), it's simply genius.

IconBuffet used to be one of my favorites, when they were using Helvetica.

I'm having deja vu, wasn't there a thread just like this recently about type-driven web site? can't find it tho.
