Futura Question Mark?

jste

Futura is one of my trusty most favorite typefaces. However, the question mark makes me want to throw up (crazy backward S). I work in exhibition design and frequently use question marks at large sizes as part of headlines etc. Museums like exhibits that pose questions to visitors. Does anyone know of a good substitute of alternate character? I don't know any font design program or I would design my own.

I've also thought the same thing about that question mark in Futura.
How about Eagle? I think you'd have to adjust the weight. (Purists would cringe, I know.)

MetroSans? It's got a question mark that you might like better. (Though IMHO it's not as strong a face as Futura.)

I like Futura's question mark. It's got personality.

Ouch! I've been away so long, I can't even remember how to post. Maybe the link will work this time. (no guarantees!)

MetroSans

You could try Avenir, it has weights that pretty closely match Futura's.

How funny to mean to find a better question mark for futura Paul Renner did :-)

Georg

HA! Design your own, good luck with that. Destroy the spirit of the face.

There are always better question marks.
Or "e"s, or anything else for that matter.
A font is not a painting.

Anyway I'd start by avoiding Futura altogether.

Why don't you experiment with substituting the character from different fonts till you find one you like?

But be careful, trying to make the one you love 100% perfect could ruin your relationship.

Looking at the question mark from other fonts is great for getting ideas, but you'd have to be pretty lucky to find one that matches the color too. Ideally, Julie should make a new question mark for Futura, or have somebody do it for her.

> ... could ruin your relationship.

Could?

Why is it, that the Futura Bold (and bolder from there) doesn't have the reversed S question mark, but the medium and lighter ones do?
I'm looking at the Adobe version.

Not enough room to maintain the detail with a heavy stroke.
This is one (more) area where contrasty fonts have an advantage.

Thanks, Hrant, makes sense. Just a bit surprised that not all the forms are the same.

Thanks for some great suggestions. The Futura Bold question mark is what I would want the Book to look. I knew some would cringe at the idea of "improving" a classic. I like this message board. Thanks for the points of view and...the attendant humor.
