Newspaper Typefaces

TGaskin

Hello, I am a student, re-designing a newspaper about homeless issues. I want to make it look more elegant than street. I'm looking for a typeface that has a high character count and is legible at small sizes, preferably something that is being used today in papers. Any suggestions?

You could browse Gerard Unger's website and read "Study of Newspaper Fonts" by Ascender Corporation

Lido is a very nice typeface for newspapers: http://www.stormtype.com/typefaces-fonts-shop/families-27-lido-stf

Charter is very legible in small sizes – and is used throughout several newspapers.

Belizio is a beautiful "newsy" font.

i'm also a fan of Poynter Old Style for a very clean, legible but traditional news face.

I too like Charter, but Arnhem is also a nice font for this sort of thing. I believe it was originally designed for newspaper work . . .

Thank you, I have Charter, and it works great. I really wanted to use Font Bureau's Miller, or Gerard Unger's Coranto or Gulliver, but unfortunately, I don't have access to those typefaces. It seems that for student work, the font shops should allow you to use their faces.
If anyone's feeling generous...

And perhaps pay for your education, plus a stipend, with vacations to nice places thrown in?

If Charter works great and you have it, use it. That's how it will be after school, too.

BTW, your bio says that you are a graphic designer, not that you are a student. On reflection, that's OK, most of us who have been professionals for quite a while hope we are still students.
