Uniqlo custom typeface

For the opening of their new flagship store in SoHo, the Japanese company Uniqlo introduced this custom typeface for all of their in-store signage, as well as, the New York version of their logomark. I wondered if anyone knew anything about this typeface (who designed it, etc.) I think it's pretty great. I pulled this image off of one of their shopping bags.

Looks like a sloppy DIN to me.

That lowercase has a interstate-like feel, although quite badly done in comparison.

The cap S is upside down ;-)

It was probably these guys... http://www.ohminato.jp/

Yikes!

"Character Set Caliligraphy Bitmap"....

Sounds like the random type schmooze generator talking.

There's one with the Underware logo.... Wonder if it's licensed?

Uniqlo in collaboration with Die Gestalten Verlag and few designers printed some apparel with logos from the Los Logos book. Yup, it's licenced!

I don't think the 'OpenType' trademark is licensed.

I can't make sense of that t-shirt store, but I'm sure some of the designs fit right on engrish.com.. ;)

Do you think I would get made fun of by other designers if I wore the "Glyph" shirt?

Probably.

LOL!

That typeface is a fu¢k!ng disgrace. It's a cobbled-up rip-off of both ITC Conduit and DIN MIttelschrift. What people think they can get away with!

BTW These shirts are unintentionally hilarious!

Yves, AFAIK, DIN is in the public domain, so a grunge version is just as valid as the pretentious interpretation that is FF DIN.

unintentionally

I suspect they are intended to be dryly witty, so if you find them hilarious it is indeed unintentional -- but the joke's on you.

The cap S is upside down ;-)

as is the cap B

>but the joke’s on you.

there's a thin line between clever and...

Chasing down "misuse" of the OpenType trademark would be quite a task for MS or Adobe these days. One with very little reward?
