Happy Birthday Emil!

С днем рождения, Эмиль!

Bravo Maxim! :-)

I wonder what the world would look like today if he would still be with us!

RiRi would have a nice logo for zippers :-)

  • Is the whole Ruder book translated into Russian? My old copy is just German, French, and English.

So is mine, actually (3rd edition, New York: Visual Communication Books, Hastings House, Publishers, Inc., 1977). My translation of Typographie/Typography was published by Kniga (Moscow) in 1982. It was just Russian (no German, English, or French), so I had to adapt the text layout accordingly.

I just got Yuri's book on Cyrillic from Moscow yesterday (you had a copy in our class), I have to do much "adapting" as well when looking at comparisans. :-)

ChrisL

Maxim,
Are you saying that you did the translation? That must be a great honor!
You meant then that you had much more space since there was only one language instead of three.

ChrisL

An honour it was. I first read the book in 1967 as it came out. After almost fifteen years I decided to translate it (from original German, of course). A contract with Arthur Niggli was signed by Kniga, so we used the original films received from Zürich. Phototypesetting in Univers 55 was done by Pravda on Linotron 202.

And yes, there was plenty of space, so, based on the same grid, I used either single-, or double-, or triple-column page layout.

I bought my copy in 1968 shortly after coming home from the war. It was my present to myself. Now it is yellow and worn but still a fine friend since I am equally worn :-)

Very nice, Chris -- you given me a reason to smile at this late hour.

Smiling is good. I don't think Emil invented the smiley face though :-)
