Research the meaning of an ornament?

Alaskan

Does anyone know of an online resource to research the origins / meanings of symbols or ornaments? I can’t seem to find a comprehensive resource.

I just found a website that’s quite good, but, alas, the symbol I’m researching isn’t there.

Post a graphic of the symbol. Someone may be able to help.

Here’s a rough sketch of it:

Looks like something Frutiger did for one of his books…

Might be related to the symbols for sun and sun cross...

History?

This style is around 3084 B.C. — Porti

The divisions of a circle are by 4 in Egypt and early Crete; by 6 in Greece, Assyria, Syria, Italy.

But you need to be more specific with your search.

You may find that sometimes, an ornament is just an ornament.

It makes me think of shields. Here is an image that looks somewhat similar.

Nobody did ask so far what is obviously to be asked first: Is ist an ornament or a sign? Where is it from? Without these tracks you’ll never know anything. –

It reminds me of the Hopi tribal symbol, or World Symbol.
Here, and here.
Which represents the world, with the four bars being north/east/south/west, the outermost points on the horizon where the sun passes through the year, the solstice/equinox points. The circles represent the “four nations, which came to the world to keep balance”.

But then again, your symbol might mean something else or nothing specific. :)

It’s embossed on a piece of silver jewelry, found on the street. Origin unknown - but it looks handmade.

All your suggestions are quite helpful; a few have come very close. Thanks!
