Muzzer reminds me of a friend who used to say:
” I am still clean because I use condoms?!”

Pattyfab, Answers in brackets
... they save lives (by preventing pregnancies?)
and prevent disease, (with healthy spouses?)
and unwanted pregnancies (No Alternatives?!)

Aziz, condoms save lives by preventing AIDS. And here in the west one doesn’t only have sex with a spouse. In fact half of Americans are unmarried according to a new study and you bet we’re having sex. That’s why we take care to use condoms. And thank god for them!
I suspect our political and religious differences on birth control, sex, population control, the role of women in society, etc. are probably irreconcilable and I’d rather not go into it here except that you brought it up...

Pattyfab, I can’t resist responding, but I just want to point out that it’s possible that you’ve reversed the cause & effect here.
>And thank god for them!
I agree entirely when they’re saving lives in africa, but when they’re replacing loving commitments, that’s another thing IMHO.
So you don’t think the stat pattyfab cited about marriages is at all related to the availability of birth control?
I’m not saying they’re in lockstep with each other, but it’s not very “far fetched” to posit a fairly strong relation between them IMHO.
I’m not even against birth control; I’m just saying that its had fairly strong social consequences. And I can see why non-westerners, for example, would be a bit leery about introducing it.
More praise for condoms:
Condoms reduce the risk of infections, even in monogamous relationships.
Condoms are the most effective method of family planning. Family planning reduces the drudgery of parents, and increases the life expectancy of women, many of whom would otherwise die of complications from pregnancy or childbirth.
Large families were worth that risk in the past when infant mortality was higher, but not now.
Contraception in marriage reduces the danger to mothers of childbirth, and is also more humane than the rhythm method. Even if carefully practised, the rhythm method fails 20% of the time, as ovulation is too variable to predict accurately. Most dangerous, eggs fertilized at the extremities of the fertile period of the menstrual cycle — which is most likely when the method fails — are more prone to non-viable pregnancies, resulting in natural abortion of the foetus. So using condoms is less dangerous. In fact, surgically aborting “condom failures” results in less aborted foetuses than the rhythm method.
Condoms are also safer than the birth control pill, which has significant side effects.
Of course, these are statistical arguments based on human behaviour as it mostly is, rather than the way fundamentalists would like us to be.
BTW, nice font...
