Going NUTS!!! Why can't I input text in an Adobe Photoshop file?

Argh! I will be doing some serious slaping on my forehead when somebody will give me the painfully obvious solution. Gosh do I feel stoopid.

I make a new document in Adobe Photoshop CS1 440x110px 72ppi white background and try to input Lucida Grande 9 pt in black but nothing happens!?. The infuriating thing is that in the Layer palette I see what I've typed (the name "Layer 1" changes to whatever I typed).

What am I doing wrong? :^(

You are misspelling "slapping."

LOL

Are you in the T in photoshop?
Have you made sure the font you want is loaded?
Can you type anything - highlight it after it is typed and then...put it in the face and color you want?

Best of luck. Hope it works out.

Lucida Grande is hopefully loaded, :^)

I’ve s strange sensation I’ve had this same problem myself long time ago.

Have you… restarted?

Are you sure the type colour's not white? ;)

> You are misspelling “slapping.”

D'oh!!! (slaps forehead) :^D

I'm in the T, I tried loads of fonts -- system ones and fonts loaded in FontExplorer -- and when I type there's nothing to highlight because there's no characters appearing. That's what I don't get -- I've done this loads of times so I can't imagine what I'm doing wrong.

Dang I need to get this tutorial online!

> Are you sure the type colour’s not white? ;)

Hehehe, that would've been too stoopid, even for me. :^P

I'll try restarting. Talk to you guys'n'gals in a bit.

Howdy, have you checked the layer's opacity/fill? Blend mode?

OK Now I opened the Character and Paragraph palettes and there was one totally insane number (something like --237658) in the following fields: Leading, Baseline Shift, Left Indent, Right Indent, First Line Indent, Space Before Paragraph and Space After Paragraph. When I started turning this number to 0 in all these fields at some point the text appeared; I think it was when I turned Left Indent to zero.

I think this is a bug. I think it's good I've encountered and solved this problem (see Lari's comment). Let's pass this information on to other people.

Check it out for yourself -- I made a screen grab.

Well now I have a prank I can play on someone who is in sore need of some cheering up. :^P

Are you running Photoshop CS2 on an intel Mac and/or are you running 10.4 with all the latest patches? There are some nasty number bugs like this when running CS2 apps on intel Mac as well as some funkiness with the 10.4.8 patches. I constantly see my 9 point fonts going to 8.xxxxxxxx... in indesign, it's extremely irritating. If you're on a intel mac, try switching to the Photoshop CS3 beta, it's a much better piece of software.

Yeah, I think I had the exact same issue. Too bad I didn’t remember it earlier. I wonder what causes that? And what’s that number? It doesn’t seem anything regular computer related, like 256, 512 and so on.

Yves, That is a hair puller for most people--you and I have to refrain though and use head slapping instead :-)

Yves, try changing the Leading in the Character pallette. Worked for me, when it happened to me.

And what’s that number? It doesn’t seem anything regular computer related, like 256, 512 and so on.

Oh, but it is! You just stopped too soon. Keep doubling...

Except for the double minus sign (which is just plain weird), it looks like -2147483648, which is the smallest value that a signed 32-bit integer can hold.

Woah, we have a mathematics genius amongst us! You are right, that's the number, except that it had a double comma at the end followed by nothing. Weird...

That is coooOOOOoool.

The screen shot ended in 3! I’m not stupid! Hey! :^)

And yes, so cool.
