Looking for a script similar to "Memoirs of a Geisha" movie logo

themisfit

My wife is trying to identify the font used for the word Geisha in this picture. If you know the name of it please let me know.

Thanks

I’ll put it out there; it’s possible that this is custom brush lettering. I could be wrong (and if I am, we’ll find out soon.)

Most probably hand lettered indeed. What would we need all those talented calligraphers for?

If you want something similar, try Escrita or Gizmo.

There’s also a freebie called “Bambino” that’s in the ballpark. (Babe Ruth reference intentional)...

You could also contact Jill Bell who has talent literally coming out of her ears.

Dennis, I’m pretty sure that freebie is actually a knock-off of Bergell.

Rob Leuschke has some very nice brush scripts that could easily substitute for this, which I agree looks hand-drawn.

Miss Tiffany- As usual, you’re right! I had never seen Bergell before... A knock-off by any other name is still a knock-off!

Hand-drawn, and with a proper pen I suspect. Interesting that here in Canada, the DVD is marketed with a comparatively boring serif....

Though he didn’t do the title for Memoirs of a Geisha, Seattle based Tim Girvin is well known and established for handlettering and calligraphy used in films, branding, logos, etc.

For some reason his name rarely appears on Typophile.

Here’s an interesting interview he gave regarding his work for film industry.

That logo for The Matrix proves Weingart’s theory that a good designer can make a beautiful design with a lousy typeface.

Agreed, Yves.
And to paraphrase another saying, There are no bad typefaces, just bad uses.

Thanks for all th help. I am looking for a asian inspired script font. Do you know where I could find something like that?

Ruth Rowland represented by illustration created the hand lettering in question. Here is a link to website.

The hand-drawn title and lips image was for the book, different design with serif used for the film. By chance I have an invite to the UK premiere and party at Nobu in front of me...

... in Trajan (of course).

I beg to differ, my esteemed colleague. There are intrinsically bad typefaces, quite a few of them even. ;^)

> There are no bad typefaces, just bad uses.

I must admit there have been some typefaces that made my brain hurt, and could quite possibly cause a stroke in the weak of heart.

> There ARE bad typefaces, and bad sayings as well ;^)

Nick Cooke’s Gizmo perfectly fits the bill, Carson.

“I am looking for a asian inspired script font. Do you know where I could find something like that?”

My suggestion would be Kendo, by the late Phill Grimshaw.

In fact, there are several scripts by Grimshaw and his friend Timothy Donaldson, which could easily be taken for Asian inkbrush or pen calligraphy: Banshee, Flight, Humana Script, John Handy, Riptide, Ru’ach, Ulysses (Donaldson); Grimshaw Hand, Pristina and Samuel (Grimshaw).

(Sorry for not taking time to make links for each of these. They are at most large vendors)
