Consumer Reports compact grotesque

Molly Seamans

Perhaps this is an obvious one, but forgive me, I'm a newbie. Can anyone help me ID the typeface used for the Consumer Reports masthead? I will be redesigning the basic layout of a mag for a design class, but one of the requirements of the assignment is to incorporate the current masthead.

Thanks in advance.

Here's a better showing…

My first thoughts were Britsh Inserat and Compacta, because of the "r", but they are both a bit too angular.

Possibly based on Folio. Maybe a stretched Bold Condensed would be a good starting point.

P.S. The masthead is usually the box on the inside of the magazine that tells who the editorial staff is. The logo on the front cover is usually called the nameplate or the banner.

I think Helvetica Compressed is pretty close, and has the 'r' that Folio is missing.

Thanks all. I'm starting to think it was drawn as a Helvetica/Folio love-child. It has many similaries to both, but isn't exactly either.

And thanks for the lingo tips, Lex.
