I am happy to announce that FutureBrand’s newest releases include the identity for 12th Fina World Swimming Championship, featuring a logotype comprised of Nick Cooke’s wonderful DIGITALIS.

more can be found on Futurebrand’s website, under CASE STUDIES.

a quick preview here.

I really don’t want to hurt your feelings or anything, but that is a fantastically unappealing logotype for anything, and had you not mentioned what it was for, i doubt that “athletic event” would have been at the forefront of my mind.

Here we are on typophile and we discuss type. Such a selection is in itself a praise to the qualities of the typeface. I know Nick and I was glad his work received (yet another) hi-profile recognition.

Maybe in Australia people know what “Fina” is, I thought it was a brand of Tuna. :-) But the poster says Disco! to me rather than swimming. Regardless congratualtions to Nick!

Well, if you know what FINA is (Federation International de Natation something), you’re fine: last year’s championships were in Montreal, where it was a horribly nasty financial mess and the organizer went hari-kiri on everyone.

That said, I really love the poster. Brilliant font, Nick!

My first thought was ‘Xanadu’ on Ice? I am I the only one who liked that film? It was rubbish of the best sort. Who is Nick Cook?

I now see why they chose to set the poster in All Caps!

Looks like some sort of Mariah Carey album cover.

The hues of the tar latte figure are painful on that blue and the magenta. And even with the amount space that lame type overwhelms, the background is still left wanting.

This effort, to me, looks like five disparate elements all forced upon a central axis, done in an attempt to meet a last minute deadline.

Very “Priscilla Queen of the Desert”

The type itself is quite attractive. It’s just the weird photoshop swirl and gay dance club-ness of the rest of it that seems a bit out of place.

Reminds me of the final scene in Terminator 2. ; )

I think there may be a strong cultural gap here. What’s disco here is more everyday there. I think that if you look at a cross section of Australian graphic design it would be clear that this design is not as out of place as it might seem. That’s my impression anyway - having been through a few Australian design annuals. Personally it doesn’t conect too well with me. It seems a bit cheesy & disco to me too. But then I am hardly the audience. And it would be good at getting attention - which is the point. Anyway. That’s my 35 cents.

unknown

It’s not the subtlest thing I’ve ever seen. Pretty tacky actually.

I don’t min the type so much. But what’s with hands?

unknown

or THE hands

Maybe they were just trying to bring some life into the design:-)

I rather like the lower case. Perhaps the fluid movement in it would have contributed to a sense of swimming? Is this a swimming only event or do they also have other sports as well?
