(x) Fat face in selfservicemagazine - Pistilli Roman (Didoni) {Mark S}

Kriznikovski

does someone have a clue what this bodoni-poster-like typeface is called?
its a spread from selfservicemagazine btw

It appears to be Pistilli Roman. I don't know of any digitized version of that, but Didoni, Phil Martin's slightly different version, is very close.

thanks mark, I think its didoni, never heard of that one before.
could not find a version of pistilli roman neither.

carousel is cool, too but not really similar

I also like annlie

and of course thorowgood

what are your favourite fat faces?

Stilla is outrageous... ;^)

... but the one I really like is Normande.

Isn't your sample a spread from U&lc or someother ITC–publication? If so, it's probably an ITC-typeface…

That's understandable, but, no, it's a current fashion magazine.

After looking at some of the preview spreads at http://www.selfservicemagazine.com , I would say that someone has digitized Pistilli Roman for them. One of the features of Pistilli Roman is extremely fine hairlines in the thin strokes. There were two or three different versions of Pistilli Roman with hairlines of different thicknesses--optical scaling for three different display sizes, in effect. The one selfservicemagazine uses looks like the thinnest one.

Didoni was a knock-off of sorts and only had one "optical size" and the digital version seems to hedge on this to make it usable at sizes smaller than 48 point. The hairlines are noticeably thicker. Didoni also had a a couple dozen alternate and swash characters which are not present in the digital version.

funny observation about it looking like aitc catalogue, it's a pretty accurate hit actually.

i dont know this particular face, but speaking of favourite fat faces im a sucker for caslon graphique : http://www.linotype.com/88790/caslongraphiqueregular-font.html

yeah, caslon graphique is definitly one of my favourits, too.
recently I got hold of a copy of vitra's new catalogue,
it has this caslon grafique like font on the cover.

http://www.designpreis.ch/bilder/medien/download_bilder/Cornel_Windlin_d...

I love the weird look of its lowercase "g" but could not figure out what font it is yet.

the catalogue is designed by cornel windlin,
i guess he even recieved some swiss design award for it.

he was a nominee (twice, for the lineto-website together with jürg lehni and for the vitra-catalogue himself). he didnt win though.

The Caslon-like font on that cover is ITC Grouch.
