"Folk-y" type for natural toys-theme store logo

KatMTstd

I'm designing a logo for a natural toys and baby goods store, and the client has suggested that the type look "folk-y". When she says this, I take it to mean that a lot of their toys are handmade and in a traditional (but not necessarily retro) style. I've considered Old Century Schoolbook because it looks like old Dick and Jane books, but I think she's more interested in something a little more organic/hand drawn.

Any suggestions?

Any more info on the store? What's the name?

To start, I'd suggest looking at P22's Arts & Crafts Pack or Letterhead Fonts.

Thanks, I'll check that out.

In the meantime, The store's name is Peapods, based out of Minneapolis. They carry a lot of toys that Waldorf schools have in the classroom. . .wooden cars and trucks, blocks, German dolls with expressionless faces, fairies— that kind of thing.

hey...peapods! Though I think they are in St. Paul, aren't they?

Personally, when I think of wodden toys and monitossori products, I think less 'folky' and more 'modern european'.

Same difference. :-)

more folksy type from p22:

P22 Woodcut
P22 Folk Art
P22 Woodtype

Keep it local, go with a Chank face:

I'd say that as 'folksy' as you can get when it comes to commercial type design.

Reading your brief, Sauna came to mind as a good possibility.

If the client wants hand drawn, you hand draw.
Or, like Saul Bass, get someone else to do it for you.
This would be a good excuse for sushi with Chank or Eric.

What if the client wants something he can't tell the difference of?

Stuart Sandler and Mark Simonson are local too - I can picture a cool hand-drawn MS logo.

Cheers, Si

Actually the P22 Costructivist Block seems more fitting of wooden toys.
But I sure would like to see Mark or Stuart get a shot at it! A logo is not a few letters of a typeface.

Stuart Sandler and Mark Simonson are local too

Right, an embarrassment of riches for Minneapolis designers.

Minnesotahas a handful of type designers, but i believe Stuart now resides in Wisconsin.

Well, I guess they just have to settle for Mark as the only guy on their bid list :-)

Paul, how long before you will be able to write complete sentences in Wiki blue?

Paul is a Wiki master dude! How Blue can he do! :-)

For some reason, arts & craft came to me when I read the word "folk-y" and "natural", also, Goudy Sans.
