No way. That's the whole point of the new kinder, gentler pop quiz. Was that too little of a showing?

This is a bread and butter font. You see it everywhere. I mean EVERYWHERE.

Randy

Optima, uc "S"?

Verdana Bold Italic, 'C'.

Trebuchet "f"?

I think Nathan got that one. Nice job. I would have guessed Optima too.

Nice Nathan,
Verdana Bold Italic C.

Make sure you send me the answer to the next one per our agreement *wink*

I was hoping the fact that we rarely ever see the outlines of verdana (only the pixels), would prolong the guessing. I hoped wrong.

Oh no, they've started their game of ping pong again...

You know, I thought Optima first, then Trebuchet - and I hit Officina & Albertus before I realized.

I'm on my way to class right now - I'll be serving in about 45 minutes. Anybody for a game of mixed doubles? ;-)

Next up:

Ampersand?

Yep, it's an ampersand.

You are a booger.
What about our agreement!!!

I've looked at all the old style italics i could possibly handle in one sitting. Nada. Maybe that's because I'm barking up the wrong tree. Congratulations. I'm now going insane.

Wait, just had a brainSTORM, Nathan just purchase the Czech library, wildly searching... Nothing.

Sorry Randy. Is it hint time?

>You are a booger.

ROTFLMAO!

:-)

Nathan, nah. That loop is the key. Not many of this veriety have the loop. I was only able to find one of the 6000 alternates provided in poetica that had this characteristic. When I resort to name calling, I must be outta my league.

Grant, that is one way to shed the pounds.

Randy

For what it's worth, I did a crappy little rendering of what I thought it might look like (using a mouse in photoshop!) and ran it through what the font. It thought it was and inline san serif. Hey you can't add an image when editing!

All the little intersections are slightly bracketed in this font. Nathan is it an italic garamond-of-some-veriety amperstand? (that narrows it down to a few thousand)

That would be a fun little exercise -- have someone post a detail of a character and let people draw what they think the rest of the glyph looks like.

And Randy -- you're not alone. I've done exactly what you did a few times in order to try to score an id.

Funny. I did the same thing for Motor-Inn, but I thought it was a 'j'.

I wouldn't call this a garamond-of-some-variety. It's not a revival, and it's somewhat well-known. Let me know if you want more info. Sorry if this wasn't kinder & gentler enough ;-)

Incidentally Randy, your Photoshop drawing is impressively close, but the original has more contrast.

[Sorry, double post]

Please tell me I didn't kill the Quiz after Randy worked so hard to resurrect it. If Kent or Tiffany were here they'd nail this right off.

[Sorry. Kent of Tiffany sounds like quite a regal moniker, but obviously that's Kent or Tiffany]

Well. that's all the hint I needed: Electra LH Cursive

Close close close, but the weight...

Oh, ok, bold then.

Absitively posolutely! Rock it, Chesh.

Ah Blast!!! I knew I recognized it!! I swear, being sick has me totally off my game.

Thanks very much to Tiff and Kent for being such public Dwiggins nuts, and to Nathan for a very good clue. Here's the next:

quiz

Chesh, I'm dying over here. I thought for sure that was Parkinson. Nope. Then I thought maybe Dave Farey. Nothing I could find. My eyes are covered in scabs from scrolling through MyFonts. Luckily I have to go to a meeting. I haven't looked forward to ameeting in 4 years, but at least it stops the insanity.

I don't even know what I'm looking at. Is it a B? An 8? Some weird l/c e?

Looks like it could be a lc g.

Speaking of David Farey, it does have an air of Collins about it... but no.

Is it Rian Hughes' Reasonist?

Oh, nevermind. What was I thinking?

Hey Chesh, toss in a clue.

Nathan was right about the glyph -- it is a capital B.

As for a hint -- too bad Terri Nunn of the 80s pop group Berlin isn't reading this forum. She'd nail it right away.

If she knew the name of the font.

I'm going to guess Paris Metro.

Nice one Lisa. It hink you got it.

Paris Metro at Da Font.

The Metro at Berlinpage.

Thanks, Grant for your confirmation. I am so excited, I don't think I'll be able to sleep until we hear back from Dave.

Was ist das?

Paris Metro?

Metropolitan or Metropolitaines by Berthier & Durey - Paris

David Hamuel

Though David is technically correct with Metropolitaines, since Paris Metro is an exact knockoff, I'm handing this one to Lisa. Nice job!

For nice visual reference:

metro

Dave, your hint was the key for me. Thanks for the great clue and the opportunity to post the next challenge.

Uncial "A"?

You have the right letter, but it's not Uncial.

I didn't mean Uncial as a typeface name, but as a type classification.

Yves, sorry I wasn't clearer - it's not that style of font.

I hope you guys understand that as an elementary school teacher I am busy with my children from 7:30 – 3:30 (Central Time Zone, USA). I may not be as prompt in responding as you are used to.

HINT: I have seen this font used in promotional posters at my bank, t-shirts, book covers (have at it, Cheshire Dave), stickers, and restaurant menus.

Here is a larger sample of the letter.

This is the one and only commercial font I own that did not come with my computer. It is available here:

Regular Joe from Art Parts

You got it Tiffany - Hurray!!! Your turn.

On your marks! Get set! Go!

Quiz

I've got a list of random guesses that are all wrong. I'll stick to one ;-)

'B' from Munich Black.

Cap B from Lithos Black?

Letter correct in both, typefaces wrong in both.
