Thai Typefaces - Any foundaries that showcase a wide range of examples?

justinole

Fellow typographers,

I'm trying to track down a full listing of thai typeface examples (to purchase), and also if there is a translation tool that is also available.

I have travelled to Thailand (more than once), and think the typefaces are very lyrical, and some, beautiful.

Thanks in advance!

From talking to people in Thailand, I understand that sadly the state of commerical Thai type design is in pretty poor shape, and apart from some government funded open-source projects there's not a whole lot going on.

Hey sii,

That's unfortunate. Not too sure where to look. I assume one could go and discuss this with various successful agencies in Bangkok, but beyond that....

Yes, I think contacting in-country graphic designers might be your best bet.

Cheers, Si

Check out the Behaviour Group. They have published Western Typefaces and Thai typefaces, pretty well known and prolific.

the brilliant xavier dupre is living in bangkok right now, and has made some thai types. maybe you can get in touch with him...

ok, sounds great! thanks for the tip....

Probably way too late now, but have you checked this:

This site is good, I saw it.

There are also some free fonts you can download here:
http://www.maccenter.co.th
They're the same faces as come with Windows I think but they look like they support Thai mark placement using the standard opentype ligature feature.

Matthew: If those are truly freeware or shareware then it isn't a problem, however—just a friendly reminder, as I am not familiar with those fonts Matthew—but if those are commercial fonts I'd ask you not to link to them here on Typophile.

I understand the point. That website belongs to the main Apple business in Thailand, so I assume they are being offered legally.

Thanks for clarifying that for me.

On Adobe's behalf I commissioned a four-member family of Thai fonts ("Adobe Thai") a few years back. It ships as a language pack for Acrobat 7.05 and later. I was very pleased with how they turned out - the design was done by Fiona Ross and production by Tiro Typeworks.

Unfortunately, the Acrobat licensing precludes you from using these fonts with other applications for authoring purposes.

Cheers,

T
