(x) Star Wars original movie poster credits - ITC Serif Gothic {Mark S}

kineticpast

Not having much luck identifying the typeface used on the original Star Wars posters for the credits and tagline, anyone able to help? Was it a custom, never been digitised or (the most likely option) am I just a poor typeface searcher?

Exhibit I - Star Wars Style "A" One Sheet.

Thanks in advance.

Looks like Busorama customized (phototype).

(Edit-a-bit): Though it was probably pre-ITC and may have come from the PLINC library. VGC also offered Omnibus (and I don't know for certain which came first since Omnibus is sampled in the 1972 VGC catalog).

Norbert? Is it really you? I can't believe you missed this one: ITC Serif Gothic.

(N.B.: Star Wars was released in 1977.)

Except the Star Wars one has rounded Es that my Serif Gothic doesn't have. Besides that it seems the same.

Nope... it's Serif Gothic.

One more thing: They made liberal use of the now-hard-to-find alternate characters (a, e, f, E, etc.)

Ah, well that would explain it. :-)

Must be all this rain we're getting in the northeast... water on the brain! ;-\

I better put my ol' Type Spec glasses on again.

PS: Such a great poster.

I always liked this one. I wish they had done the whole series in that style.

Thank you all very much. The un-digitised alternates make me feel a little better about my hunting skills!

Love that one too, Mark. A lot of great poster art, and then we get stuck with poor photo-montage DVD covers!

Yes, that's a cracker too... except the Jawa looks like he's putting out a fire! :-)

My absolute favourite is this one because it's my favourite character from my favourite movie. Tick and tick. The only (sort of) drawback is that it's printed on mylar so it's shiny and reflective, which always makes people say it looks like of those beer mirrors you find at a bar. Hehe.

Anyone got a specimen of the alternate characters for Serif Gothic or know a place to look? - I would love to see what the set looks like beyond the poster

Thanks, I just found them myself in one of my VGC catalogs
