Miehle Gothic?

chuck0 votes

I'm working on project about MF Benton's gothics and have seen references to Miehle Gothic but have not been able to find it. Monotype has a few Miehles but no Gothic. In fact the faces look more like semi serifs then gothics. Also, if anyone can add to or subtract from the list below please do. They must have been designed by Benton not reworked such as Globe Gothic (as far as what I have been able to ascertain).

Franklin Gothic 1902
Alternate Gothic 1903
Clearface Gothic 1905
Miehle Gothic 1906
News Gothic 1908
Lightline Gothic 1908
Novel Gothic 1928
Agency Gothic 1932
Raleigh Gothic Condensed 1932
Headline Gothic 1936

Thanks,
Chuck

AFAICT, "Miehle Gothic" would be a wider version of the semi-serif design in question.

According to Mac McGrew's American Metal Typefaces of the Twentieth Century, which shows Miehle Extra Condensed, "Normal and and Condensed widths [of Miehle] were drawn but apparently not completed."

I once had a particular interest in the Miehle faces for a project I was working on, and even did a quickie digitization of Miehle Extra Condensed. I've never seen any further info on the other faces, although if there were any it would probably be at either Columbia University or the Smithsonian.

Patricia Cost might also have more info, if you can get it from her.

Cheers,

Dennis Ortiz Lopez gave me permission to use and give away his .ttf fonts, including this one. If you'd like it, e-mail me, and I'll dig it up. I think it's on my old computer. This is called Miehle Classic Condensed.

In 1993 ATMiehle-Condensed was issued - by Miles Inc. later Agfa - not on Myfonts today to purchase so may be ancient history - they do know about it if you Google "ATMiehle-Condensed"

I read "semi-serif" and got excited, but then saw it was merely a flare serif. :-(

Thanks guys for the the info. It seems that, as far as I can tell, that Meihle Gothic does not exists.

Good info. Who is Patricia Cost, does she know a lot about Benton?
