Type Story on CBS Sunday Morning

Mark Simonson

Did anyone else catch the short item on CBS Sunday Morning yesterday about type? It was a few minutes long and featured interviews of Steven Heller and Jonathan Hoefler. It was predictably shallow, but fairly well informed. It reminded me a bit of the famous Erik Speikermann "Typomania" video (but without the Tom Tom Club music).

I don't normally watch this program, but my parents do and thoughtfully TIVOed it for me so I could see it. I checked the CBS website and they don't have the item viewable online.

And you were not on the show Mark?

ChrisL

Now if they could get that damned acrylic sign on the set under control. My eyes!

And you were not on the show Mark?

Er... no. Tobias Frere-Jones was visible in one shot, but I can't remember for certain if he spoke.

So there went your 15 minutes of fame :-)

ChrisL

Mark, can you encode from Tivo and post it? If you're deathly bored that is.

hhp

I think so, but it may be a couple of days.

Update: I called my dad about it and he's already moved the footage from the DVR to digital camcorder to his Powerbook.* The file is too big to email (almost a gig), so I'm going to pick it up in the next day or so. As soon as I get a chance, I will get it down to web-viewable size and post a link or something here.

* I'm lucky that my dad, who turned 76 this year, is so tech-savvy. Most people his age can barely cope with a mouse.

My mother is 87, I can't imagine asking her to put a DVD disk in a DVD Player let alone copy one from a broadcast.

ChrisL

Mark, 1 gig sounds like way too much - must be an
encoding issue. But I'm sure your dad can handle it. :-)

hhp

I think it's straight DV format, which is about 200mb per minute or so, but I'll know for sure when I get the file.

Got it down to a 5.1mb QuickTime movie:

Nice. Thank you Mark.

My Win-XP (Quicktime or Media Player) doesn't support the encoding. :-(
But don't spend an hour re-doing it for my sake.

hhp

Hrant, I was able to view to clip on Windows XP. Try getting the latest Quicktime player.

I made a cleaner encoding in MPEG-4 (6.8mb) here:

You should be able to view it in anything that works with mp4 files, too.

WAHOO! Air Conditioner gets it's 15 minutes as well :D

I noticed that, too. I was pretty sure that was one of yours, but I hadn't got round to checking. :-)

Thanks for the clip. I wish my father was that savvy!

Thanks Mark! and thanks to your dad too :-)

ChrisL

Thanks Mark.

Cheers!

After a 36Mb QT download, I can see, I can seeee! Thanks Mark.
And I think it was pretty good for network TV. Or even just TV.

BTW: "... invisible, yet quite visible."
It's called "subvisible". Use it.

hhp

Thanks Mark (and your dad!). That was treat.

You dad reminds me of my grandfather who is in his 90's and has been scanning photos of birds, printing them out on canvas paper and painting over the birds and adding a background. And now he wants me to create a web site for him to promote his paintings. Not everyone who is past retirement age is technophobic :)

thanks!

Not everyone who is past retirement age is technophobic.

My mom's sister, who is about the same age as my dad, used to use a Mac. My dad and I would spend hours on the phone with her explaining the simplest things (like opening a folder icon). And then we'd have to start all over again the next time she called because she immediately forgot it all. I don't remember why, but at one point, she decided to switch to a PC that offered unlimited free phone support. That was one case when I was happy when someone switched from the Mac, but I feel sorry for the phone support people at Gateway.

Maybe Gateway now makes heavy use of caller ID :-)

Gateway tech #1: "I am not taking that call! Give it to Mikey!"
Gateway Tech #2 (AKA Mikey): "NO! Not me again! I have answered that caller the last three times--someone else do it!"
Gateway Tech #1: "Hey, I have a GREAT idea! Let's get him to switch to a Mac!"
Mikey: "Been there, done that :-("

ChrisL

i know its been said, but thank you for posting the video. most appreciated!!!

To everyone: You're welcome.

In the CBS story, one of the guys being interviewed was talking about 30s script faces, and he used a term I can't remember...can anyone help me out?

That's it. Thanks.
