Typophile

Have you ever thought about designing your own tombstone? A morbid idea, perhaps, but something a true typophile should certainly consider as it may be the most everlasting piece you design—a sort of last business card in stone. It’s not something I necessarily thought about until nearly two years ago when I had to design one for a family member. I didn’t want to go with the standard designs and type options the monument company provided, so I asked if I could design it myself. In case you’re interested, it only requires an Illustrator/EPS file much like one you would prepare for a vinyl letter cutting machine. Everything has to be converted to outlines and you have to keep in mind how the machine works. I started by doing some research in the cemetery into which the tombstone I was doing was going to be placed. Attached are some photo that served as my primary source of reference.

Well, once you’re dead, the only thing that counts is what other people think of your life.
So maybe it’s best to get people who knew you to design your tombstone? The problem,
of course, is the risk of them setting it in Comic Sans.

> risk of them setting it in Comic Sans

Aaarrggghh!

Would god/whatever allow it? If it did, you’d know for certain you’ve ended up in the wrong place…

My wife says my side should be set in Baskerville and her side should be set in Mrs. Eaves. Very saucy of her, I think. I prefer Storm’s John Baskerville.

Wouldn’t a tombstone be a great place for an interobang?
In fact, nothing else, just:

If you don’t design it yourself, it probably won’t end up being set in Comic Sans—heaven forbid—but in the monument company’s “house” font(s). In the case of the cemetery I was in, almost all of the contemporary stones used the same serif/san serif combination, as shown below. Anyone know what the sans serif font is? Kind of nice.

Some previous threads.
Personally I would prefer a (well-nourished) tree as a headstone.

Just set mine in NOW Sans Light and add the comment.

“Now that Chris will never see the Light of day again”

Goin’ out with a pun instead of an interobang :-)

Chris, that would just lead to eternal pun-ishment for the rest of us!

If they would allow sky burial we could save a lot of space, feed a lot of hungry scavengers, and be done with planning our monuments.

I believe it’s a win-win proposal…
