unicase sans on GQ May issue cover

retinch

The font used for all the headlines on this cover. What is that font? I likes.

Hmmm, can you give us a sample? Is it the unicase?

hi Geoff, I just attached the cover pic.

Unicase can be very fun, youthful, with an energetic rhythm, but it looks amateurish here. GQ is more classy than that.

I swear I’ve seen this somewhere else, I can’t really quite recall the name of the typeface.

I’ve always thought GQ was a little hit-and-miss with their typography. This doesn’t look too pretty, it’s like a unicase Helvetica. :^x

Sorry not intending to hi-jack this thread, but how can one turn amateurish/not so pretty unicase into good looking unicase? Is this dependant on the typface? What typeface characteristics support generally considered good looking unicase?

Maybe they loved the photo and wanted to use it but realized anything other than all caps would disappear next to all those white teeth. But, they didn’t want to use all caps so the next best thing is unicase.

Nathan, I don’t really have the type design expertise to answer your question but have a look at Licko’s Filosofia Unicase and Jeremy Tankard’s Disturbance. I think serifed types works better at unicase than sans, which just doesn’t look right IMHO.

Previous threads on unicase here and here.

I find GQ is more miss than hit from what I’ve seen on their type selections. At least they are willing to try out different fonts though.

i think that looks quite nice myself, as i’m a sucker for unicase. the lowercase r in a unicase font is wrong, wrong, wrong though.

I was noticing this morning that Bodoni 26 is $19.95 at p22. I could swear the last time I looked it was something like $100. Anyway for $20 that one is ripe.

Does anybody know the actual font name though?

Manfred has one that is similar Mono Alphabet. A few other nice unicase at his site is Artist & KL1 Monocase Serif and Mono Mouse. Comercial use requires a donation to a charity that helps mankind.

Here something I just ran across. Apparently buried in a sans set by Storm, is this monocase called Teuton 24 Pro:

If we knew we would’ve told you. :^) No solid leads yet.

Are there plugins for InDesign or Quark that will make unicase type for you??? Was there some utility that did this?
