Portable Document Format not just PDF

Tiffany Wardle

We all know that fonts can be embedded into PDF, TrueDoc and SWF files. What are some other file formats into which fonts can be embedded?

Depends how you define embedding but here are a few...

PowerPoint presentation (Windows)
Word document (Windows)
Publisher document
HTML (via linked EOT or PFR)
Printer spool files

Cheers, Si

Let’s not forget EPS, as well.

Would you say SiFR is embedding? I’m not sure what this is, I’ll go check the wiki.

> Would you say SiFR is embedding?

That falls in the SWF embedding.

We should have a wiki article on the various caveats associated with embedding fonts in these formats. As I recall there are limitations with some of them, particularly the MS formats. Some questions are: Full Font or Subset? Can the document be edited? Is there a mechanism for determining if a font is missing? Are substitutions automatic?

About SiFR: D’oh! I knew that.

Carl: Great idea.
