quick way to assign PUA?

paul d hunt

is there a quick way to assign PUA codepoints to all unencoded characters in my font? or is this something i need to know python for?

I think if you select all the uncoded ones you want, then go to the glyph menu and scroll down to something like encoding, one of the fly-out options is “assign unicode values”.

I will check to be sure and get back to you.

It is called “Generate unicode” and you can apply it to a multiple -selection.

Paul,
You mean after Thomas said Sunday to not put unicode points in PUA, you are going to do it anyway? I just dumped them in one of my fonts :-?

ChrisL

aha, must have been looking right past it several times. thnx chris!

I can’t believe I actually helped YOU for a change :-)

someone else also said the same day that PUA were okay in decorative fonts to allow users of apps that aren’t unicode savvy to access all alternates. PUA aren’t appropriate for fonts that are meant to set text. At least that’s how I understood it...

Ahh, yes, now I remember. Are you doing a dingbat font?

ChrisL

well, if you ARE a dingbat, isn’t every font you make a dingbat font? >^P

Guilty as charged :-) Good thing I am not a pie ;-)

ChrisL

Now I get it Paul—Then I must be a Greek font :-)

It was me who said it :) PUA should be avoided when it’s really important to preserve true character information in a continuous text. A font like Zapfino Extra that isn’t used to typeset long texts but its purpose is rather to make “text collages”, is fine to use PUA. After all, the designer will most likely use some ornaments, calligraphic extensions and other non-text elements in it. It really doesn’t matter if the final result isn’t totally searchable, because in a typeface like Zapfino, it’s the GRAPHIC effect that counts.

In short: if form is more important, PUA is fine. If content is more important, avoid PUA.

good summary, Adam, I didn’t want to misattribute any misinformation, so i was vague: but now you have it from an expert!
