Your Favorite Typeface NAME?

Claes Källarsson

Yes, it's the ultimate in the way of junk food threads. (;

I have to say I do admire a good name in a typeface though, since coming up with that perfect name can take almost as long as the actual designing of the darn thing! Or maybe it's just me.

Anyway, what's your favorite typeface name?

Mine's "Bembo". I could walk around and say nothing but Bembo all day, just because it tastes so good to say. Bembo. Bembo. Beeemboooo. It's delectable!

Hmmm. Bembo is an early 20th century reconstruct of a Griffo letter from 1495. Wish I could remember the bibliographer's alphanumeric code for it. Doesn't exactly roll off of the tongue though. Not exactly junk food in that regard.

I think the "darn thing" probably took a great while to cut (design was not a consideration). They didn't even bother to name "letters." I doubt they even considered there was such a thing as the delectable, unless of course, they were thinking of the type of righteous life that would lead to salvation.

either you're yanking my chain or you didn't understand what i'm saying at all.. i didn't mean that the typeface is junk food, this thread is. naming your favorite typeface name isn't exactly high science or deep debate, hence it being a sort of "junk food" thread.

Antidisestablishmentarianism

Unfortunately no one's used it yet. I'm not a type designer so it's up for grabs…

Once I got a group of blondes to pose for a photo under a sign that said BEMBO (a bakery in Mexico that makes junk food and bread), I think it was probably the margaritas that made it funny to me.

(most people here probably know) Storm Type has a CD of fonts with the excellent name of Typophile.

Someday it'd be fun to partner with one or more designers to have fonts to offer at my site, like:
FontPlay Clean (sans)
FontPlay Odd (odd)
FontPlay Nasty (grunge)
FontPlay Hand (if my writing were used it would be another grunge font)
etc.

I'm not sure about the situation where another company started claiming a trademark on something called "fontplay technology" after I had been using the name FontPlay publicly for about 7 years. If I start doing anything commercial I'll probably have to get a lawyer's opinion.

There's actually a Mexican tortilla company called "Bimbo".

hhp

Now that you mention it that was the name of the bakery. It makes it easier to figure out why I thought it was funny. Bimbo/Bembo-I was only off by one.

I think the ultimate names for typefaces are Futura and Helvetica. They work like brands.

Pooper Black :) is nice

my favorite fontname is eureka

Bearded Lady

Sometime i will make a font and call it "The Big Bad Wulf" Because in germany wulf is pronounced like the english wolf

i really wanted to call Zaner "Zanerian," but it didn't pass the boards. >^(

Centaur.

Claes

Yeah, yanking your chain. But at least I kicked in your junk food thread for you.

"I could walk around and say nothing but Bembo all day, just because it tastes so good to say. Bembo. Bembo. Beeemboooo. It’s delectable!"

What the **** man.

I'm going to make a blackletter face soon called "bauchweh" (that means "stomach pain" in German).

I was showing my work to a typography professor about a year ago, who long ago worked in a type design drawing office. She said that some of the things I had done made her sick to her stomach. I will dedicate this new design to her whenever I release it ;-)

I am working on a semi-serif face (among many others) called "Froggy". It was inspired by one of the first Typophile weekly challenges involving Cooper Black ligatures. It does not look at all like Cooper (thank god) but it will have a contextual alternate that inserts my silly "gg" ligature everytime the word Froggy is typed. It may also work on Doggy and Soggy or any other light-hearted word.

ChrisL

It's looking nice Chris.

ThanksEric, it has a long way to go before I post it and it is low in the cue of faces I am working on.

ChrisL

Chris, that's great!!

hhp

Thanks Hrant, it must not be a modernist face :-)

ChrisL

Thank you!

Of course there's Dennis Hill Speeding by Graham Meade, which everyone knows means: Get outta the way!

Eduardo Recife has some very interesting font names. Some of the more creative ones are "Horse Puke", "Disgusting Behaviour", "Nail Scratch", "Print Error" and "Dirty Ego". They're sort of chewy, you know? And I kind of like that about them. In a sick, unexplainable way.

I also have a fondness for the best-selling Typotheticals font:
Flute

Chris, I love that font so much, I just want to find something with double g ligatures to use it for! It's a beautiful face (quite literally!)

Thanks Andi! I am almost ready to post more of it in the critique area.

ChrisL

I also like the names of these fonts: Fetish No. 338 by Jonathan Hoefler and Dogma by Zuzana Licko.

I have a set of fonts called "Religion" The three weights are LossOfFaith (which mixes up the characters), Obedience (jumps all over the baseline), and Order (all g's). It says they're from FontShop but I can't find them on the site. They about sum up how I feel about religion with a wink and a nudge.

Typeface design aside: from a name point of view only: Quadraat is a longtime fave name of mine too. Also; Inconsolata, Wunderlicht, & Consolas.

And the font is fun too.
