Romanian Characters not showing up

neutura

Hello.
I am on a mac and using fontlab 4.5
I have added in four extra characters with the generate glyphs:

T comma uppercase & lowercase
S comma uppercase & lowercase
( the characters with a comma centered under them)

They had no naming as far as unicode goes once it made them so I typed in the correct values the glyph properties. They still do not show up.

Is there a something that I need to indicate in the font info area? Like language support? or make it a unicode font. I have run out of ideas...

thanks in advance

> so I typed in the correct values

Could share them with us?

> They still do not show up

Where? Fontlab? Or you’ve generated the font and the characters you’ve added don’t show up in the applications you’re using?

Fontlab’s (v4.5) alias.dat file inside the folder “Mapping” might not have the necessary entries.

Use T+commaaccent t+commaaccent S+commaaccent s+commaaccent
instead of Tcommaaccent tcommaaccent Scommaaccent scommaaccent

Of course, you’ll need to have the necessary glyphs (T t S s commaaccent), before you use the command “Generate Glyphs...”

The values are below. They also appear to be correct if I open a blank font, select unicode as view, and pull down to Latin Extended B. Which is where they reside in my current font.

S comma = 218
s comma = 219
T comma = 021A
t comma = 021B

They appear in the font and fontlab file. They do not appear when typing in applications. Any for that matter. I’ve even converted my computer to Romanian and I get the same thing. They do however appear in the glyphs palette and exist in the font.

When making a multi-language or extended character font do you need to specify that in any dialog boxes?

Your glyph names and Unicode values are not entirely correct. You should use these:

Ș — Scommaaccent (U+0218)
ș — scommaaccent (U+0219)
Ţ — Tcommaaccent (U+0162)
ţ — tcommaaccent (U+0163)

Some more info on the subject, from the Fontlab Forum:

Thanks for all your help.
I have tried everything suggested and still do not appear in applications. I have tried giving them two unicodes, separate unicodes, unicodes as names. etc, etc...

In the Adobe glyphs palette it doesn’t seem to want to recognize both sets.
0162, 0162 vs. 021A, 021B. It won’t accept 021A, 021B

To make it more confusing it worked once in one font out of five!
ANy other ideas?

this is nuts. It seems so simple!

Don’t give up, you’re in the right path.

Right now, you’re probably just experiencing font cache problems. Read this thread:
http://www.typophile.com/node/16143

Also, do a search on your computer and trash all the files named “AdobeFnt.lst”.

Thats funny. Thats my post. Maybe you know. I feel the same way this time! Argg!
So since then I generate to the Adobe font folder. I will try the trash thing. Do all of you guys work for a type house or something?

Some do, but most have to build up their experience just like you: trial and error, and a lot of thread reading/posting.

And, in case it makes you feel any better, even type foundries face problems... so don’t despair :^)

Like Thomas said, It is very much like those days, unfortunately. We’re on the new font frontier, cowpokes. Saddle up and watch for raiders!

I love that quote Miguel! I remember it from the “Going Bald” thread too. :-)
