Is the InD CS2 .inx format a placebo or does it work?

Chris Lozos

I have tried on several occasions to get InD CS2 to save a file as interchage format, .inx, so that it can be edited on a machine running the older CS version of InD. It saved the file just fine but I have never been able to open it (or have any of my clients or subcontractors) in CS. It just crashes no matter how simple the file is. It seems to involve a font issue but I have the issue when the only fonts I use are the Myriad bundled with InD so I don’t get it.
Has anyone had success using the .inx format and been able to reliably open it in CS without crashing?

ChrisL

PS: do we need the Phinney signal?

I’ve had no problems with it, other than some broken image links. Classmates of mine have had problems. Dunno.

Works for me. My memory is foggy but I know I had to download an update (maybe two) to make this work. Have you updated both programs?

Good Luck!

Adobe InDesign CS 3.0.1 April 2005 (CS2 Compatibility) update

“This April 2005 (CS2 Compatibility) update for Adobeᆴ InDesignᆴ CS 3.0.1 software provides key fixes that allow users to open InDesign Interchange (INX) format files exported from InDesign CS2 in InDesign CS.”

Thanks guys! I will check my CS version when I get home. I usually am an update fanatic though.

ChrisL

it’s always worked fine for me...

Indeed, it will crash without the update.

I just checked, I do have the update and it still crashes, Hmmmm.

ChrisL

It this some huge document? Does it still crash with just some text on a page?

Best of luck.

8 page doc with eight eps Illustrator simple logo files and about 10 paragraphs of text. 1.2 megs.

ChrisL

Wow. It shouldn’t be a problem.

Have you tried a 1 page doc with just some text in the font you’re using?

Postcript error in a logo (although I don’t know why this would cause the crash)?

Then…

Done the usual drill - trash prefs, etc. ?

It’s worked for me, too.

I sent a file to Miguel Sousa who was kind enough to test it for me. It worked fine on his system. I guess I will have to assume it is me and reinstall a bunch of stuff :-(

Computers are so much fun…

“Computers are so much fun…”

Not as much fun as Bestine and Rubylith :-)

ChrisL

It is distressing that we have to learn the tools over and over again.

Rather Sisyphean…

But I guess it smells better.

LOL!!!

*opens a bottle of Bestine and takes a huge whiff* (you might be surprised to know that it was on my supplies list for my ’Production’ class last year) Cripes this bottle will last me for a lifetime at least.

David,
If you wish to keep it a lifetime, seal it tightly, it evaporates quickly :-)

Oh, and DON’T DRINK IT!!! :-D

ChrisL

You mean no celebratory Easter shots of Bestine in a toast to my fellow designers?

Not unless you have a suicide packt!
:-)

Also, i’ve noticed that .ai files work better than .eps in general with InDesign. Same goes for .psd versus .tiff.

ID loves native Adobe files. One more point in its favor…

True story. I know some members of the Bing Crosby family. One of the women was caught by her son drinking rubbing alcohol. When her confronted her she said “But it was only a jigger”.

I’m glad she wasn’t doing production back in the day…
