Typophile wisdom: Paul Cutler

I liked this statement from another thread. Font is mono alphabet

Dude, You could have warned me! That design is completely, like, gay.

I’m probably too old to be cutting edge. I like looking at cutting edge things, as long as they don’t delve too far into the ugly realm.
But I’m too old to be cutting edge myself.

Fredo, LOL!

Actually though Dennis, although this might be
a bit too SpeakUp, it might actually be nice to
have like Typophile “motivationals” like this.

BTW, what’s cutting edge? Homosexuality is as old as the hills.

I think if it looks bizarre, like Eduardo Recife’s stuff, then it must be cutting edge. I heard a fontmaker named Carson is supposed to be cutting edge with some of his graphic design, but some of his things I saw would indicate that cutting edge is anything you can convince a customer to pay lots of money for. More power to him, I guess.

Carson is old. He is/was a lot of other things* before being
a “font maker”. And he used to be “cutting edge”, but then
big companies did pay him a lot of money so he would make
the cutting edge mainstream.

* Including a professional surfer.

Also:
Cutting edge might indeed need to look
bizarre, but not the other way around.

> And he used to be “cutting edge”

I’ll add some things I saw were quite nice. And possibly if his commision was to make something *arrestingly* ugly, then the customer definitely got his money’s worth. So maybe I’ll have to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Of course, I’d love a customer like that, because I’m pretty sure I could be cutting edge for ugly if I was getting paid.

> ... it might actually be nice to have like Typophile “motivationals” like this.

It would be fun, but my guess is some designers don’t do things just for fun, and others who are worried about their reputations would be intimidated to post things where their style might be criticized?

Hey, being criticised -or at least critiqued- is a big part of Typophile! ;-)
But you’re certainly right that the more “established” a person the
less he’s likely to want/need other people’s opinions. Which is sad.

I have no reputation, and on top of that I’m relatively fearless and very humble. These traits are in a never-ending battle, and ’no reputation’ is continually the victor.

I’ve used this forum for several critiques and every time the responses have contributed to better work. The reason I don’t post all of my work is because I feel that if I’m going to be asking others’ opinions I should put some time into evaluating other work on the forum. Often, I just don’t have that time.

> Which is sad.

“Established” designers seek criticism, no? Just that it’s not on forums but through employees. I work on my own but show everything I do to a group of people whose opinion I value. That’s probably a reason many people don’t post on forums—one often doesn’t know the credibility of the audience. Now, this can sound like a good thing, but I’ve seen it just be annoying.

Type designers have employees? ;-)

> one often doesn’t know the credibility of the audience.

And what’s the worst that can happen if the credibility is low?
Plus you can always lurk for a while first and figure it out.

> Type designers have employees? ;-)

Ha. Good Point. Not many, I suppose. Though the critique section has a lot more logo critiques than typeface critiques, so I was thinking about graphic designers. Let’s go with employees=colleagues.

> And what’s the worst that can happen if the credibility is low?

Not much, just that it can be distracting.

Ok, I take that back. I just spent a couple hours trying to make something truly ugly and discovered there must be a technique to it. It’s not that easy.

easy:

Which Corel product did you use to edit the image? ;-)

“Which Corel product did you use to edit the image? ;-)”

LOL!!!! It’s a new plugin called “Barf” :-)

If it were Corel I’d have dropped in clip-art... and used Bard

Good one DG!

Playing off Dan’s idea, (now with special text for people with rings in their noses)

Btw, this is a mummy baby in the Museo de las Momias in Guanajuato MX. If you are ever in the area, make sure to stop by the cemetary. it is something you’ll never forget.
