Dwiggins Book recommendation needed

Prakash Nair

Can anyone recommend the "must-have" book by Dwiggins?

All of them.

or the best collected writings: MSS by WAD

I doubt you could get closer to Dwiggins' heart than The Dwiggins Marionettes.

great thanks.

I am surprised that our resident Dwiggins devotee Miss Tiffany has not yet chimed in.

I have to agree with Rich, all of them is the best answer. There is a book, soon to be released, about Dwiggins' life which will be a must have. The MSS are good. WAD to RR is really good, an excellent (and historical) "primer" for type designers. I'm a collector though. So maybe my thoughts are warped.

Tiff,
What is WAD to RR? Some of us don't know the code.

Who, what, where? And please stop telling people to get "all." There won't be enough for the rest of us.

It also contains one of my favorite typographic quotes;
Curves do all kinds of queer things when reduced.

George, I'm pretty sure the "official" announcement will be out by TypeCon of this year. The book which Dorothy Abbe put together about stencils, which I purchased from Emigre a billion years ago, is a great way to observe his use of black and white.

Oak Knoll has a few juicy items right now. Search for WAD.

For anyone collecting Dwiggins, the best reference is Dwight Agner's The Books of WAD which lists everything he designed.

I'm sure that book will now be considered incomplete once this new one comes out. =^D But it is an excellent resource.
